Tiger Woods, Steve Williams and winning golf tournaments
Well, there it was, big as day. If you wanted to know why, ultimately, Tiger Woods decided to end his working relationship with his now-former caddie Steve Williams, the reason was in plain view during a virtually unprecedented live tv interview of the winning golfer’s caddie on the 18th green after the final putt went down.
The pure arrogance of what Williams had to say, combined with the underlying venom with which he said it, made it clear. This guy is totally out of touch with reality as to his importance to the winning efforts of Woods. And to hear him say it, he all but made the winning shots for Adam Scott all week in Ohio.
Please don’t misunderstand me; I say Steve Williams is a very good bag man. To be truthful, he has adapted well to the many different personalities he has partnered with over 30-plus years. In fact, he may be a perfect fit for the gentile, underachieving Adam Scott.
But Tiger Woods is no Adam Scott. He is a freak of nature, virtually impervious to pressure. Any professional caddie would do a fine job for Tiger Woods. He just won’t affect whether or not he wins.
