Vijay is OK!

I have to disagree with my esteemed and learned colleague, Dave Berner, and agree with some of those who responded to his blog about Vijay Singh being so boring. One guy was right, the media asks too much of pro athletes – we want them to be both great athletes and colorful stories – which are mutually exclusive most of the time. I remember covering the Dolphins and 49ers back when Montana and Marino were playing, and the media getting grumpy over Montana’s blase off-field personality. The complaint was the same: Montana was too boring, but I was there and it was obvious the sportswriters were simply bored with their own questions. It’s great when a champion like Singh is a quote machine, but we have to accept it when he’s not. All this guy does is golf. When he isn’t playing, he’s practicing. He is not one of the world’s deep thinkers, and he has the personality of a Wal Mart parking lot, but who cares? I don’t want to bend at his knee for sage wisdom, I just want to watch him play golf better than anyone in the world. Comments:

What a wize comment!!! I wish more people in your trade could admit the same thing. The top athletes have reached their position through pinnacle sports performance. Not rethorics! Why can't we be satisfied with just who they are? Does really every corner of their personality has to be scrutinized? NO!

The real issue is whether writers have the same standard of excellence as the athletes. Red Smith never had trouble finding something significant to say.
