Forget Myrtle Beach, head to Pinehurst

Anybody over, say 38 years of age, should forget Myrtle Beach as a golf destination, and head to Pinehurst. Myrtle Beach is a mess, with nothing but withering traffic and fried food joints, and only a handful of good courses. Pinehurst is about nothing but golf. You can drive in minutes to any of several great courses – including of course, No. 2, and contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend a fortune. Of course, there’s no nightlife, but aren’t you tired of the same old, tired, run-down MB “gentlemen’s clubs?”

Mr McDonald,
I thought you were bad mouthing Pinehurst No. 2 in your other blog. Now you are suggesting I leave a place with more golf courses than I can count and go to a place you called overrated. Pick an opinion and stick with it.

For the past 15 years I have been going to Myrtle Beach twice a year. I go in August for a week with the family and also in January with my golf buddies. I also go to Pinehurst for 5 days with a different group of guys.

Continuation from above: I am not ready to give up on Myrtle Beach just yet. If you know where to look you will find many more exceptional restaurants in M.B. than Pinehurst. Now here is the part where Pinehurst is lacking. You plan a 5 day trip 6 months in advance, you get rained out 3 of those 5 days, what do you do? In M.B. I guarantee you will find something of interest for everybody in your group. Not in Pinehurst. Quality of golf courses I think is about the same, what you find at one location you will find at the other. However there is one thing Pinehurst has over M.B., and that is a course called Tobacco Road. I have been playing golf for almost 30 years, and this is the most fun golf course I have ever played. I paid $125.00 dollars to play Pinehurst #2 and felt cheated. I would have paid that at Tobacco Road and left there feeling good.
