Bent Creek one of better bargains in Jacksonville golf

I’m a fan of municipal golf courses. Always have been, always will be. I like the working man atmosphere, playing with the great unwashed. Of course, the down side are courses left un-attended, weeds sprouting in the fairways, pock-marked greens and bored bureaucrats behind the pro shop counter.

That’s why it’s always a treat to play a really good muni, like Bent Creek in Jacksonville. Formerly known as the Golf Club of Jacksonville, Billy Casper’s management company has turned a decent muni into an excellent one. Casper poured $300,000 into it – a lot of money for a muni.

It’s actually one of the better bargains in Jax. It is in excellent condition, with scrupulously sculpted bunkers and its bent grass greens are among the best the area has to offer. Look for the full review coming soon.

I've always found the "great unwashed" to be an insulting term. Does that mean that muni golfers don't bathe with the frequency of country-clubbers? I will say that Billy Casper Golf does a great job with both new builds and refurbishment. Can't wait to visit J-Ville soon and play Bent Creek.

Hey mon, you bring up a good point. Not sure where "great unwashed" came from. It might have been Steinbeck. Any literary types out there know?

TIM - thanks for taking the time to look up decent, playable municipal courses. MOST of us aren't club members and have to make do on these, so finding good ones is a treat.

If you'd like a GREAT muni in the Tampa Bay Area, check out Mnadalay Bay. It's a well-designed and fairly challenging course that is kept in very good shape by our wonderful city workers!
