LPGA correct not to issue media credentials to bloggers

At the risk of alienating my fellow TG bloggers, in particular, Barry and Stacy Solomon, I have to say I agree with the LPGA’s stance not to issue credentials to tournaments for bloggers.

Now, this is nothing personal against Barry and Stacy. Their blogs for us are top-notch in quality and chock full of interesting information. We are lucky to have them aboard.

But, not all golf bloggers rise to their standard. Let’s be honest here: a great many bloggers have absolutely no journalistic experience or expertise. What does it take to be a blogger? A PC and a mouth. Nothing more.

Bloggers can report anything, without going through the usual checks and balances journalists are taught in Journalism 101. Bloggers can be notoriously unreliable, inaccurate and even vindictive. Who holds them to account? Nobdody. Who’s the blogging ombudsman? No one.

Besides, there are so many of them, they’re like stray dogs. If the LPGA, or any sports sanctioning body, started credentialing bloggers, they’d be overwhelmed with a bunch of mediocre, know-nothing bloggers.

The general public stands up for bloggers because they can become one without any work or knowledge. Most likely, those who cry for the rights of bloggers have some anarchism in their backgrounds.

Now, I do agree that some bloggers deserve respect and credentials – Stacy and Barry, for example – and the LPGA and others should do their homework and find out how many millions of readers TG bloggers, among others, reach.

But, that’s asking them to do a lot of work, and I’ve found most sports sanctioning bodies are pretty lazy, like a lot of bloggers I have read.

As an experienced sports journalist and member of the Golf Writers Association of America I'm with you, Tim. The fact of the matter is one must pay some dues -- eat some chunky divots as it were -- to get to the big show.

Uh, Dave, please read the whole blog. You're giving us "experienced sports journalists" a bad image.

Tim was writing about the LPGA. I'm confused what this "big show" is that you speak of.

Covering an LPGA tournament equates with covering Jr. high water polo as far as paying dues goes.

The TGers keep pushing their vast readership. But "legitimate" media have verified, often independently audited, readership figures. TG claims 2.5 million, but I get 3-4 different versions of every newsletter -- does that mean I count as 3-4 different readers? And I'm not even sure how I got on the TG list in the first place. Can you prove those 2.5 million readers all read TG on a regular basis? Or even a fraction of them, a fraction of the time? If not, stop boasting about your readership. It has nothing to do with why you did or didn't get credentials.

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter...bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

The first time I agree with you, Tim. Who the h*** did they think who they are? Media crendentials for bloggers? No chance.

Blogging is no professional journalism. Not even close. It sure is anentertainment but media crendential. H*** no.
