Ponte Vedra Inn and Club calls in Bobby Weed for Lagoon course makeover
The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club loves architect Bobby Weed. It called in Weed to renovate its famed Ocean course in 1998, and has again called on him to re-do its other course, the Lagoon.
The first order of business is to lengthen the Lagoon. It stands now at only 5,570 yards, ridiculously short by today’s standards. At the same time, they want to keep it “user-friendly,” as a contrast to the more difficult Ocean course.
The Lagoon started out as a nine-holer, designed by Robert Trent Jones in the early 1960s. Nine holes were added in 1977 by Joe Lee.
Officials said the re-design ends a 10-year upgrade of all the old resort’s facilities. I can remember a time when the PV Inn and Club was THE place for the well-heeled in Ponte Vedra. Now, of course, it’s overshadowed by all the big wigs down the road at Sawgrass.
The Lagoon work is scheduled to start in May and conclude in November.
