Ocean Course picked to host PGA Championship in 2012: How many of us will be alive?

The Ocean course at Kiawah Island was recently picked to hold the 94th PGA Championship in 2012.

Observation: Many of us, hopefully not including me, won’t be around in 2012. Why do they have to pick these things so far ahead of time? Any number of things can happen before then. A hurricane, certainly, maybe several. Fungus. Terrorists. Locust infestation. Secession from the United States.

What, are they going to start preparing now?

I’m not griping about the selection. The Ocean course is one of my favorite courses in the world. It endeared itself to me even more when it recently announced that, beginning next year, it will go to walking-only in the mornings.

I suspect it has more to do with public relations that practicality.

Anyway, the Ocean course will become only the fourth course to host each of the PGA of America’s major championships – the Ryder Cup (1991), the Senior PGA Championship (’07), and the PGA Championship.

There, that’s what they actually wanted me to say.

Ummm, yeah, they are going to start preparing now. One of my buffalogolfer.com writers has "swamped" at the PGA championship for two years now, and had the opp to pick the brains of the inteligentsia. Look at the US Open staffs, where they essentially move in for two years at a time (and that's just the full-time guys!) Lots of stuff CAN happen between now and then, but lots of stuff won't happen between now and then. Imagine your local course that plans a year ahead of time for Monday outings and charity events. Amp that up to include the world's top pros in a major...small wonder they need six years (olympian proportions, you know.)

I hope South Carolina secedes again and
ruins the plans of corporate PGA. Hopefully
SC will also be the host of the inaugural
CS Open.
