Some little golf gizmo winners at the PGA Merchandise Show

Win a free golf book!

The PGA Show has a little corner with booths manned by those little companies you sometimes read about in the back pages of golf magazines. They always seem to have some patent pending gizmo. Some promise amazing results, others are more practical. Some actually have good ideas. Here are a few of the winners I’ve found.

The Backsaver golf grip can save you from having to bend over and pick up embarrassing missed putts. You can also use it to suck up “gimmes” before you are officially awarded one.

Being from Florida, I’ve noticed some old-timers using different versions of these, and thought it was a great idea. The backsaver has different grips and three different sized suction cups. When the cup wears out, you replace the cup and not the grip.

It’s endorsed by chiropractors!

The 4-in-1 Golf Club system has three wedges (gap, sand and lob) and a putter which break down into two sections and fit into a traveling case you can stick into your luggage. You put them together with a patent-pending connector. This has been done before, but the people behind the idea say the connector is what sets this above the others.

“We’ve had 100 pros hit our club and not one of them knew it had a connector,” said Lou Oberman, the man who came up with the idea. I swung one, and other than it being a little heavier than a normal wedge, felt pretty good.

The set also includes “almost golf” balls or you can use regular balls.

“I’m supposed to give a press conference in an hour,” Oberman said. “I don’t know if anybody will be there – I’m just a small fry.”

Adjust-a-putter. Adjustments can be made for head weight and balance and shaft angle. It can also be adjusted for a left-hander.

The head weight can me adjusted from 13 ounces to more than 20 ounces. It can be balanced to offset (heavier toe, heavier heel).

The shaft angle can be changed from 60 degrees to 80 degrees in five degree increments.
