Charleston full of history, but there’s plenty room for golf

Most people think of history tourism when they think of Charleston, S.C. If you walk around downtown and the historic district on this peninsula city, it’s easy to see why.

There are beautiful buildings dating back to the 1600s here. You can spend a bittersweet day just walking around the cemeteries. They’ve taken preservation seriously here since the start of the century and it’s achieved the status of high art, in that the viewer is drawn into another world.

But, there is also golf. There are 20 courses in the Charleston area, if you include the courses on Kiawah Island, about 30-40 minutes away.

I’m playing Charleston courses this week and next, so look for a full overview coming soon, as well as individual course reviews.

And, oh yeah, the restaurants are fabulous. People are saying Charleston is taking over for New Orleans as far as inventive southern cuisine, and I can believe it. I’ve already become an expert on she-crab soup.

Yeah, there are a lot of fine golf course there. If you go one hour north, you will find 18 fine championship quality courses around Myrtle Beach. Of course, there are one billion golf courses if you include Pinehurst, 2 and 1/2 hours away. Curses, Tuft family and air conditioning!
