Who's fooling themselve more: CBS Sports or John Daly?
Thursday April 26, 2007 | 15:28:57 129 words, 3837 views
CBS’s refusal to run the John Daly ad for Maxfli is about as hypocritical as Daly being treated for alcohol abuse but still drinking beer. The network says, officially: “Any implication that participants are drinking in excess or performing an activity that requires a level of alertness while drinking does not meet network standards.” Network standards. Just what exactly is a network standard? From what I see – and it is a rare moment indeed when I allow a commercial to slip across my screen – the network standard is slightly above imbecilic and way below merely stupid. Don’t sympathize with the marketing slicks. They’re the same people who would tell you Baghdad outdoor markets are just as safe as Indiana state fairs in the springtime. Whoops, that was John McCain. Forget McCain. If your talking CBS, think Dan Rather and memos.
Yes, Alex, and did you hear Dan Rather's recent comments? He was talking about the right wing's "slime machine." LOL. Talk about the pot calling the kettle.

Agree that network standards are "imbecelic and stupid", but also have to say that so is the John Daly ad in question. I'm no PC freek, but I wish the people who make these things had just a little more class. You can use Daly and have a lot of (even pretty edgy) fun without losing all semblence of class. I think the worst part of that ad is the ultimate exploitation of Daly.

I for one am all for the ban. John Daly is a disgrace to professional golf and to himself. Moreover, I am all for any improvement in standards since Rathergate. CBS has been doing the bottom-dweller thing long enough and I applaud this move to raise the bar a bit.
