Tiger Woods makes AT&T more attractive than The Players Championship as a major

I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping the AT&T National becomes a major before The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra. I doubt either one of them ever will – we don’t even know if the AT&T will stay at the Congressional – but if one does, I hope it’s Tiger Wood’s tournament.

Woods was a big reason the AT&T was so successful, and why some players said it had the feeling of a “mini-major.”

Woods kept the ticket prices low – $25 for a single day-ticket – much, much lower than the Players. Parking was free. At The Players, they charge you 20 bucks a day.

Woods did his bit for the kids: Those under 12 got in free, and those aged 13 to 17 paid $10.He also gave away 5,000 tickets to the military – a pretty big deal in Washington, D.C. – and provided special viewing places for them to watch the action.

It’s a classier tournament than The Players, which has the atmosphere of catering exclusively to the well-heeled crowd.

Tim - I live across the state from Ponte Vedra (St Pete) and visit often. The whole AREA is 'upscale' so why would it surprise anyone that that is who shows up for the tournament? ALSO - I paid $10 to park at the Disney Orlando tournament this year...paying to park at a sporting event isn't a big deal.

Hey, I used to live in St. Pete, working for the old Evening Independent.

I also was born and raised in the Ponte Vedra area, before the ultra-rich took over and wouldn't let us riff-raff in.

It was paradise then. You could park alongside A1A, climb across the sand dunes and go surfing. Now, all the big homes block the ocean, and they guard them with their high-priced lawyers.

They once tried to get me fired when I wrote a column blasting them for keeping the public out where it had every right to go.

Still, you're missing the point. A tournament, in my opinion, that caters exclusively to the well-heeled, should never be considered a major.

Re: the parking. I'm simply pointing out how Tiger did a lot for the fans, in this particular tournament, by allowing free parking.

The Players would never do something like that.
