Fed Ex Cup: Look, it really isn't a playoff, OK?

The Fed Ex Cup is causing a lot of confusion, especially among sportswriters, never exactly known for their ability to absorb detailed information.

So Tiger Woods and Ernie Els skip a “playoff” event? So what? Does that demean the whole shebang?

Look at it like this: They’re high seeds and don’t have to play with the rest of the irregulars. Basically, they’re getting byes. Happens all the time in other sports.

True enough, byes in other sports are the result of well spelled out rules, and Tiger, Els and others just say, “I think I’ll skip this one.”

They’re all locks to advance, so why bother?

Golf is a different sort of sport anyway. It doesn’t really lend itself to a raucous, playoff atmosphere. You won’t see much tailgating at the BMW Championships in Chicago or the Tour Championship in Atlanta, though I hear Tim Finchem may wear face paint in Atlanta.

Golf is a high falutin’ sport in a business-like way, and the word “playoff” just doesn’t fit.

Sadly, I can’t think of another one that does. Uber-tournament? Hostile takeover? Super Big Payoff for the Already Obscenely Wealthy?

See?

Maybe that’s why they just settled on the exceedingly boring name of Fed Ex Cup.

It just ain’t a real playoff.

THANK YOU. i never understood why everyone got their knickers in a twist because tiger, phil, etc decide to skip an event in the cup.

If it was mandatory, then the rules should have spelled it out. Chances are the Colts will NOT play the first round of the playoffs this year, so what?
And they should all be gald Tiger didnt play & win, because then where woudl the drama be?

You're absolutely right. I guess I react badly to the contrivance of it all. Heck, even the PGA Tour's own ads call it "the playoffs."
And it is--as you say--just like a bye when one of the biggies opts out a week. And Finchem will be OK as long as it's not a bye-bye.

Call it what you want, but I like the Fed Ex Cup; it adds some drama to a period that would otherwise be seen as nothing more than the pre-silly season.

Call it what you will, its not a playoff. Whay not reset all points to zero if its really a playoff - then it really would
be about "who plays best in the 4 event"
like the PGA claims. Its not - its like
giving the Yankees a 2 game lead in a best
of 5 playoff series. How about double
elimination match play. Maybe Rich Beam
would beat Tiger instead of getting
screwed.
