Island course at Innisbrook Golf Resort wants to be compared with famous Copperhead

The Island golf course has sat for years at the Innisbrook golf resort and stewed, like the lesser known brother of a Hollywood star. Say, one of the Sheen or Baldwin brothers.

The Island course was actually the first built at this excellent resort, on the west coast of Florida and within sniffing distance of the Gulf of Mexico. The Copperhead course came later, and became known as one of the pro’s favorites along the PGA Tour’s Florida swing.

The Island is now getting some lavish attention. The new owners at Innisbrook, Salamander Hospitality, say they want to return Innisbrook to its glory years and as part of that are pouring money into the Island course, the track that attracted many to Innisbrook in the first place.

Officials started renovating the Island within a day of the change in ownership. They re-did all 18 greens, added 19 new sets of tees and put in new cart paths, just to name a few improvements.

I thought the Island was an excellent, scenic course when I played it a couple of years ago, and I still think so after playing it yesterday. The folks at Innisbrook want to start an argument: Which is better, Copperhead or the Island?

Look for the full reviews on both courses coming soon and I’ll give you one man’s opinion (Hint: Copperhead is still better).
