Big hitters a dying breed in golf?

I agree with monster driver J.B. Holmes, who says the PGA Tour may be taking some of the fun out of the game by setting up golf courses that favor the dinkers of the world. “A lot of fans go out there to watch somebody hit it a long way,” Holmes told the Sydney Morning Herald. “You get on some golf courses and it just takes the driver out of your hands. You don’t want to disappoint anybody, but then again you’re playing a golf tournament and can’t just whale away on the driver every time…Fans want to see big, great scores and everything, but they want to see people hit the long ball. That’s one of the big draws in golf.” It’s weird – technology keeps enabling golfers to hit it longer, but officials keep penalizing long hitters by squeezing fairways and putting in bunkers. Think about it. What’s your favorite facet of the game when you play? I’ll bet the vast majority of everyday golfers would say hitting towering drives. Comments:
Obviously, all rules in sports are arbitrary, but I think there should be a happy medium. You shouldn't take the driver out of the boomers hands, but neither should they be able to blast away with impunity. I would strive to create a 50-50 split between risk and reward and give the big hitters something to ponder.

Excuse me, but there are tons of long drive competitions for that ... and I'm sure they'd love to have you in attendance Timothy.

Got to go with Ms Hannigan on this one - I go to golf tournaments to see GOLF (the 'whole enchilada') and I go to Re/Max contests to see the big hitters perform. Got to love those Bang drivers...awesome!
My favorite facet of the game when I play is keeping my score under 80 - for 18 holes...LOL!. I could care less if I hit it 320 off the tee but I'm in the 90's at the end of the day. Leave a comment: |
