Great family restaurant in Myrtle Beach: The Spring House

I’m always on the lookout for good barbecue joints and down home cookin,’ since I’m essentially a hillbilly, and I found some good eats today in Myrtle Beach.

There are more than a few restaurants along the Grand Strand that advertise themselves as “family restaurants,” but many of them are more concerned with their marketing than their country fried steak. Note: Skip Friendly’s Family Restaurant unless you want grilled fish that tastees like goo.

The Spring House Family Restaurant ain’t one of them. It’s got country dinners with THREE side dishes instead of your standard two, including black eye peas, turnip greens, baby lima beans and rice and gravy.

I got the fried chicken and it was more than I could eat. They’s a big, fat breast waiting for me in the refrigerator.

Here’s what the restaurant says on its menu: “We invest a great deal of time and energy into serving consistently delicious ‘made from scratch’ meals reminiscent of the old-fashioned flavor you enjoyed at Grandma’s kitchen table.”

It’s a varied menu, with seafood, other house specialties and even an Italian section.

The waitress will pat you on the shoulder and ask how you like your tea and the cashier will ask you if you want a bag for that newspaper.

Spring House has three locations along the Grand Strand. The other two are in North Myrtle Beach and Murrell’s Inlet.
