Michelle Wie: same old story, making excuses already
Wednesday February 20, 2008 | 13:32:29 164 words, 3551 views
The season is barely underway and already Michelle Wie is making excuses. Wie, who had a season last year that could only be described as a travesty, said she will never be the same, physically, after her wrist injuries. “I just accepted the fact that it’s never going to be 100 percent ever again,” Wie told the media before the LPGA’s Tours Fields Open in Hawaii. “After a major injury last year, it’s never going to be the way it was before.” She’s 18 years old and ready to give it up because of injury? One wrist was sore, the other fractured. I’m not downplaying the seriousness of a fractured wrist for a golfer, but this is a teenager we’re talking about. I don’t buy it. By all accounts, the fracture wasn’t career-ending. My guess is that this is a case of Wie trying to lower expectations. She doesn’t really need to do that. I’m guessing after last year, most people’s expectations couldn’t be any lower. Comments:
Tim,
Yeah, I do not remember Annika mentioning anything about her two ruptured disc before winning the last tournament. Michelle keeps talking the "think positive" game and then makes comments about her wrists. I think it would be easier to get the plans for the H-Bomb trigger mechanism than it would to get the real story about the "broken wrist."
Someone will go low the first two days and even par will be the cut line. Michelle will be two over and will miss the cut. Then what?

Couldn't agree more. At 17 (when the so called injuries were sustained) a sprained wrist and/or fractured wrist would heal perfectly. And as some people know, broken bones heal stronger than they were before. hmmm. Now if Arnold Palmer fell and hurt his wrists could be a different story about its impact on his future, but a 17 year old, ATHLETE????? Give me a break.
Of course what is more startling than the ridiculous dribble about her wrists coming out of her mouth is the fact that her Team and especially Nike would allow her to say it?
And if Nike was unaware that she was thinking this and could say it, what do they think now? Not a great return on a $20 million investment.
OH MY GOD, THE DRAMA!!!! Has she left middle school? Oh, the humanity, the humanity! And to think that I saw in her the promise of Tiger Woods!!! In the words of Carl Spackler, I have to laugh. Thank you, Tim, for the fine job that you do.

The SBS went by practically unnoticed.
Glad the needle is starting to move in women's golf again.
This is the type of excuse sandbaggers usually make before getting "talked into" a high $$$ skins game. Had I never heard Bubbles speak I might have believed she was playing possum.
Typical Michelle, she is already going Wie Wie Wie all the way home.
Hahaha, You guys must have been ill all winter without your favorite whipping baby.
I wondered how long it would take for the whining to begin.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that "ronmon" has gone totally over the edge? Unless someone is forcing him to post comments on other writers blogs (hits and $$ are two reasons that spring to mind), I really can't see any reason or relevance to what he's been posting lately. It's just all a spew of dark and vile poison. Could he just be depressed that Commie Billary Clinton is fading fast in the primaries? Gosh - take heart lad - Commie Osama Obama is right up there close to 'next President McCain' in the polls!!! ;)

BTW - Tim, thanks for the update on the latest (and unsurprising) news from Camp Wie. A career-limiting injury at 17? Well, thank heaven she has all that Nike MONEY to soften the blow! *grin*

69 in round 1. Pretty good.
Alex,
Since I'm boycotting Mario's blog, I'll write this here. Your analysis of Bubbles' round was spot-on. It's correct to say it was a good round; it would be foolish to deny that. It's also correct to say it was an anomalous round; as you pointed out, 4 fairways, 9 greens and 23 putts means that she was beating the percentages. And one thing about the percentages is that they always catch up to you. There is something called deviation toward the mean. Her ball-striking was average (for her), but her putting and short game were obviously stellar. Thus, when the last two facets of the game come back down to Earth, her score will move in the opposite direction. I expect this to happen today. Mind you, I'm not saying she will blow out her round, as it's entirely possible that her long game will be better today. However, what is for sure is that yesterday was an anomaly.

My, Judge Smails. What hypocrisy! If you are boycotting Jennifer, shouldn't you have the courage of your convictions and not read her blogs, let alone REPLY to a posting on it via TIM'S blog?
Wendy,
I'm boycotting posting to her blog. Writers generally don't like being withered on the vine.
