The Masters at Augusta National is the weakest of the majors

Hey, it’s true. Don’t blame me.

The field is the weakest. Just ask Stephen Ames.

“When you compare it to the other major events, it is the weakest field technically,” Ames told the Calgary Herald. “There are only 90 players (at the Masters); the top 50 players in the world are guaranteed. Of those 90, there are 20 old guys still playing, past champions, who shouldn’t be playing golf. So, technically, it’s a field of 70.

“Hey, I’m just quoting facts. The Players Championship is a stronger field than that one.”

Ames won The Players, by the way, but he’s speaking the truth.

The Masters is certainly the most sentimental of the majors – all those old-timers well past their competitive days limping around the fairways, all the azaleas, the history, all those melodramatic pronouncements by giddy announcers.

But, the fact remains it is the weakest. If you win either the U.S. Open or British Opens, you’ve accomplished something greater than winning the Masters.

Don’t argue with me. It’s a fact.

Well, one can't really argue with Ames' logic. The only perspective one could lend this is to point out that most of the competition comes from the top 50 anyway (I don't know what percentage of majors are won by the players in the top 50, but it has to be quite high). Nevertheless, it cannot be as tough for the reason you cite.

I went to a Friday round at the Masters and saw Arnie, Jack, and Gary almost hole out on 16 in the Friday round. It was the only tournament that would "allow" that to happen.

Ames ought to be glad that the formula includes him. Allowing one golfer in the top 50 in the world to win and allowing past champions to enjoy their grand accomplishment is part of the deal..get over it.

I would rather to see a Greg Norman vs. a Larry Mize but every tournamant has a glitch or two. And how about Sandy Lyle on the verge of making the cut. Why invite 30 marginals and have most of them not make the cut?

Keep the Masters a "special" tourney. For tradtion, beauty, and excitement, it is the best major in my opinion.
