Johnny Miller right on with his comments about Tiger Woods, the formerly presumptive Grand Slam winner
Thursday May 8, 2008 | 12:35:50 201 words, 5177 views
Johnny Miller showed why he is the best, most brutally candid golf analyst yesterday with his comments on Tiger Woods. Woods, as most people might know, talked early in the season about his pursuit of the Grand Slam. Miller must have been thinking what I and a million other golf fans were thinking. Isn’t it a little early to be making such a bold prediction? Even if it’s Tiger Woods doing the talking? “I’m not taking a slam at Tiger, but I think the Grand Slam is something you start thinking about on the first of August, after you’ve won the three other ones,” Miller said during a conference call with the media. Woods, of course, finished second at The Masters, dashing any hopes of a Grand Slam. Miller also talked about how convenient it is that Woods is skipping The Players Championship for arthroscopic knee surgery, pointing out his less than sterling history at the TPC. You’d think Woods might have waited a bit for the surgery, opting to play the tournament with the year’s strongest field. Woods is so dominant, most people – particularly in the media – are petrified of saying anything that might be construed as criticism. Miller isn’t. Comments:
Johnny Miller is a bitter old fool! He's just jealous that he's not as good as TW and if he was playing today he would have his lunch handed to him by Tiger. He's a Tiger Hater. Just appreciate old man, don't hate.
Wow, talk about hatred and jealousy.
Miller is one of the few analysts willing to criticize the Great Tiger, when he deserves it or even IF he thinks he serves it. Those who fawn over Woods are blinded by legitimate criticism, like you.

Perhaps the real fool is Tigger; for making premature predictions.
I certainly enjoy watching golf broadcasts lately - There really ARE other golfers participating in these weekly events.

Well said, Johnny, once again proving why you are the best announcer in golf. The only one even close to being that truthful is Peter Alliss, who sadly gets little airtime in the US.
How much do you want to bet that Chuck D is black?
Maybe Tiger should be more humble, as he has proven that he is not infallible. Johnny is correct, try to win one at a time.
Let me get this straight. You are saying Tiger should have put off knee surgery until after The Player's. Are you suggesting Tiger should have had the surgery after this week's event, thus missing the US Open?
Tiger is the only player of this generation who has even a remote chance to catch Nicklaus' record of 18 professional records. Are you really so out of touch with the history of the game that you think he would rather win The Player's rather than be prepared for one of the majors?

From watching Tiger at The Masters you could tell that he was having knee trouble. He seemed to limp a few times and struggled to climb out of a bunker. I think Tiger planned to have the knee surgery between The Masters and the Open. If he skips The Players, so what? It's not a major, just one of the leading second tier tournaments. He certainly has his sights on the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA wether or not he wins the 2008 Grand Slam.
I detect a little racism from Miller and Tim.It seems that media, people are simply waiting for TW to "mess up" and then they "crucify him". Have you not been told that you reach for the stars always if you want to be the greatest at what you do. TW has achieved almost everything in golf except the grand slam.TW 'sin' was actually voicing his desires out loud.

I detect a little racism from Miller and Tim. -------------- Is Tiger Woods above being criticized because he is primarily Asian and minorly Black & Indian? C'mon now. If you want to argue about the criticism itself, fine, let's have some intelligent discourse. Believe it or not, most of us don't have an ulterior motive. We WANT to "judge a man by the content of his character".

RE: We WANT to "judge a man by the content of his character".
I agree--but look at Judge Smails' comment above. The Tiger critics usually play the race card first.
Right on, Shanks.
These knee-jerk racist accusations are irritating. In fact, it seems to me the accusers are the racists, injecting race into issues that have nothing to do with it.

Mojito000, I'll let Smails discuss that one with you. (Smails, you got some explaining to do.) I was speaking of Miller & McDonald since they were singled out by Pam. I KNOW they are not playing that b.s. race game. That was legitimate criticism, whether anyone agrees with their stance or not.

First off, I have to disagree with poster 'chuck'...I don't think Johnny Miller is a "bitter old fool" by any stretch. He was a very good PGA pro and he is an interesting commentator.
Second, I'm going to disagree with poster 'pam' in that I don't see anything at all "racist" in either Miller's comments or Tim's blog entry. Tiger DID say he was focusing on the Slam this year and didn't even close out the first one. If Sergio made the same statements, the media (and bloggers) would have ripped him badly. For the Judge: I've absolutely no doubt that poster 'chuck' is one very angry black man, and that poster 'pam' is a middle-class liberal democrat white female from Massachussets (or California). PS - "my" demographic...white, male, Central, FL, over 40, 150K+, 9 hdcp.

BV & Smails, I think it is entirely possible that Chuck is a young white man and a huge Tiger fan. I doubt that he's much of a golf fan (w/o Tiger) tho.

rotflmao.....Shanks.....I noticed immediately that you make no mention of poster 'pam'! *grin* Would that be because you recognized the 'call of the liberal democrat' as I did from her post? ;)
For the record, if poster 'chuck' is a Tiger fan and not a golf fan - I don't particularly care what his demographics are. Golf has been and will continue to be around a lot longer than any one player.

All Johnny Miller talks about is Tiger Woods, even in tournaments he's not playing in. Did anyone watch The Players Championship? It was "Tiger this" and "Tiger that." He never focuses on the players actually on camera. He's got to be the worst analyst in televised golf history.
Johnny Miller is an awful analyst...how can he question the shots that Tiger takes the man has 13 majors----come on how many does Johnny have?
