U.S. Ryder Cup team wild card picks

‘Zinger called me up on the telephone the other day and said, “Tim, if you were picking the Ryder Cup team today, who would you choose?”

“Zinger, you’ve got to quit bothering me, I’m trying to write.”

“Have you seen what I have to choose from? I’ve waited this long hoping someone would get hot, but NOBODY is hot. Please, help me, Tim, help me.”

“OK, but this could change.”

Rocco Mediate. Good Ryder Cup temperament. Loose enough to keep everyone relaxed, but that hides an intensely competitive spirit.

Woody Austin. Emotional opposite of Mediate. He’s a little wacko, but wacko in a good kind of way. Wacho in a way that might unnerve the Euros.

Hunter Mahan. This guy is just an awesome golfer at times. If he can find his rhythm at Valhalla, he could do some serious Euro-damage.

Jerry Kelly. Don’t know why, I just like this guy in this kind of atmosphere.

Kelly chokes every freaking time he has a chance to make a national team. He wants it too much...he might make a team at age 44, when he finally amps down. Thumbs down.

Other three...you're winning me over to Rocco...He has no experience, but what the hell...He LOVES poker and I want a card-flipping prick on my team when it's crunch time.

My replacement for Kelly...Carolyn Bivens...Just Kidding!!!...Ha De Ha Ha...actually, I like Stricker if he's driving it straight, because he putts out of this world.

Suddenly, another contender arises - Kevin Streelman. On the heels of a 6th at Wyndham and one shot out of the playoff last week, he just posted 5 under in the first round at Boston. If he could somehow manage to win this week, he's in and Verplank is out.

You just have to have Mediate as one of the 4 picks! Who else on the team will bring any "fun to the fair"?

Mahan (if he can take all the ribbing at mealtimes) because he doesn't have grind it out for 4 rounds, just play a couple of blinders.

Stricker + "hot 1". (Maybe I was wrong about Azinger's lateral thinking - your comments re Piercy/Streelman).

NB Kaymer m/c Gleneagles - out of running for Euro team.

Sure, make Rocco a vice captain to get him there, but PLEASE don't pick him for the team. He's playing like the old Rocco again - scraping it around.

Ha! At least he didn't MDF like Mickelson and Perry.

Seriously, though, don't you think there's any difference between grinding out the 4th round when you know you're not in contention, to how fired up he would be in single rounds? If he's not scared of TW, don't think he'll be scared of any Euro either- at least that's why I still harbour a little (v. little) hope for him.

Not so seriously, he's also a lot more fun and a little better looking than most of the US team.
