Hey, I'm in St. Petersburg, where's the World Series?

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Either I’m going deaf, blind or senile – maybe all three - but for the life of me I can’t find any evidence the World Series is being played here.

Granted, I’m playing golf during the day, but I’m also doing a lot of driving around town, including around Tropicana Park, and I see and hear – almost nothing.

A few small signs on businesses, a couple of people overheard talking about the game. That’s about it. If you didn’t pick up the local papers, you might never know the Tampa Bay Rays were playing a historic World Series with the Phillies.

Where are the raucous fans? Where are the huge banners? Where are the wild gatherings?

People make sport of St. Pete for being God’s Waiting Room, meaning they think it’s just a bunch of old people waiting to die.

That’s not totally accurate. I lived here for five years and had some pretty wild times here. There are a lot of young people here.

Maybe they’re just not baseball fans.

Comments:

Or maybe they're at work today! It's not a holiday. The median age in St. Petersburg is mid-30s and dropping. And, besides, many fans live miles away and drive a long way to get to the game.

The fact that you lived in St. Pete for five years isn't going to exactly change it's image, Old Mac. Good job finding that group of young, hipster 70-year-olds to have those wild bingo times with though.

When I moved away from St. Pete, a great deal of the fun and sex appeal left with me.

I cut a swath through this town, and I think we all know what I'm talking about.

People don't like to think about those things when it involves their great grandparents. That's an image we can all live without.

Timmie Mac.....just go, OK? As a CURRENT resident of St Pete (and one that's UNDER 50...) we have lots of excellent nightlife - blues clubs, waterfront bars, and OH...a baseball team playing in the World Series! ;)
