Columbus Dispatch columnist Joe Blundo blunders by kicking golf courses
Columbus Dispatch columnist Joe Blundo took the opportunity in the April 3 edition to ridicule the imminent demise of two Columbus-area private golf courses. Thanks for reinforcing stereotypes, Joe.
I freely admit that I’m a registered Democrat who doesn’t believe in a
liberal media bias. Just check out Fox News if you believe that the media is against everything Republican. But Blundo has done nothing to convince other people there’s no such thing as a liberal bias. Why? His column skewers golf and golfers by the insinuation that anyone who belongs to a country club is an elitist snob on the order of Judge Smails and his buddies.
Sure, you can find that stereotype if you want. But if Blundo had done his homework, he might have found that the two clubs he mentions - Dornoch Golf Club and Winding Hollow Country Club - were among the most accessible in the area for new members. You didn’t need to be sponsored by an existing member and the initiation fees were rock bottom. My guess, and I don’t know it for a fact because I never personally asked, is that you could have gotten into either one of them if you were willing to pay monthly dues.
He lampoons the industry by saying working-class golfers could get into
country clubs with federal government assistance and drops in words like “commoners” and “FEMA trailers.” Country club members will thank us, even as they reject our applications to join, Blundo says in his closing remarks.
Sounds to me like someone has a serious inferiority complex.

That notwithstanding, Fox news is one channel on the tube among many. If you want evidence of the overwhelming liberal media bias, just click on the tube to CNN, MSNBC, CBS or NBC. Or just take a mass communications and media course.
If you want a more balanced perspective, turn the tube to the News Hour. Instead of the liberal, superficial, pablum-fed junk these stations spoon to the masses, maybe you could watch the News Hour and make up your own mind (for a change).
Dornoch residents for instance, are about the furthest from being elitest snobs that you could find living on a golf course. I should know, I live there! I'd bet Mr. Blundo would be surprised to know that the majority of homes in Dornoch are pretty much middle-class sub-$300k homes, and the people there are about as nice a neighbors you could ever want (even though there are a good number of Republicans, Joe).
