There are great golf courses all over the world, though the best ones are in North America and the British Isles. Sure, the rest of the world is coming along, but as of right now, these two places rule the roost. When one thinks of great golf in the United States, Florida, California, Arizona, New York and even Texas come to mind. What would you say if I made the argument that Ohio belongs in that same golf School of Rock?
Just look at the latest Top 100 rankings in Golf Digest’s May issue. Muirfield Village Golf Club in Columbus is No. 18. The Golf Club in Columbus is No. 40. Inverness Club in Toledo is No. 41. Camargo Club in Cincinnati is No. 55. Scioto Country Club in Columbus is No. 58. Sand Ridge near Cleveland is No. 60. Double Eagle Club in Columbus is No. 70.
Canterbury is in Beachwood and ranks No. 94. I’m willing to bet with Jack Nicklaus’ redesign of Ohio State’s Scarlet Course, which was designed by Alister MacKenzie in the early 1930s, will re-enter the Golf Digest’s ranking the next time around.
Short of that, eight golf courses in Ohio make the top 100, and four of those are in Columbus. I couldn’t find any other city in America with four courses in the top 100.
Florida may have a temporary upper hand in collegiate basketball and football over Columbus, but Gainesville has nothing on good old C-Bus when it comes to outstanding golf courses.
