On computer meltdowns and Scott Verplank's win

Win a free golf book!

One day last week, I was going along just fine when something odd happened. Nothing too strange, just a seemingly random occurrence that popped up out of nowhere. Suddenly, everything else I was doing was affected. With no one to help me, I flopped around like a fish on a dock. There was nothing much I could do about it - I’d tried all the fixes I knew and nothing worked. I had to look for serious professional help.

Since you’re a golfer, you probably assumed I was talking about my own game just then, right? One swing flaw can magnify itself into real yips or worse on the golf course. But I really was talking about my computer, which I know even less about than a golf swing. When you work from home, there is no such thing as tech support. You’re on your own and when you get disconnected from the world, it really becomes painful quickly. I had to get my tech-savvy brother to help me, and he lives in England. I think it does go to show you how disconcerting sudden change can be, no matter what part of your life it impacts.

On a different subject, I thought Scott Verplank handled himself in a classy way on Sunday. Not that I think Verplank is known for a history of bunker-busting hotel rooms or any other sort of unsociable behavior, but I know it must have been nerve wracking to try to win at home.

I’m curious if he’ll actually ride that chopper from Orange County Choppers. By the way, when is the 15 minutes up for that family? The dad bitches at the sons, everyone crabs and whispers and then they get the custom made motorcycle done just before the show ends. I get it.
