The success of Nike’s Sumo drivers has spawned Sumo irons. In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to Equipment Editor Kiel Christianson about the strangely shaped clubs.

“They are definitely game-improvement irons,” Christianson says. “And despite the fact that they look kind of chunky from the bottom, when you set up to them, they don’t look quite as flab-like from the top.”

Florida is always a great winter golf destination for northern golfers. One new golf course, Old Corkscrew Golf Club near Tampa, is likely to be packing in the golf travelers this season, according to National Golf Editor Tim McDonald.

“It’s actually named after a nearby river,” McDonald says. “It just opened and it’s already won an award from the Golf Course Association of America, which named it the Florida course of the year for 2008.”

Senior Staff Writer Chris Baldwin talks about how the fires that ravaged the west coast in the past month have affected the area’s golf scene.

“It seems like most of the major public courses have escaped huge damage,” Baldwin says.

This podcast is supported by St. Andrews Golf Tours, Pioneer Golf and MyrtleBeachGolf.com.
