Right now in Orlando, Fla., the best golfers in the world are teeing it up in the Tavistock Cup.
One would expect a tournament, even an unofficial one, with the best players in the world competing would garner more media attention. Alas, the fact that it’s a “tournament” for pros like Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Sergio Garcia to collect a few hundred thousand while glad-handing corporate money men seems to put the media off a bit.
From the Tavistock Web site:
“Established in the 1980’s, Tavistock Group is a private company whose holdings include real estate, bio-technology/life science companies, financial services, restaurants, oil and gas investments, manufacturing, professional sports teams, sporting events and consumer goods companies.”
So, apparently with some time to kill before the Masters, he’s hitting the links with some CEOs, COOs and other acronym-enhanced men. He and super-friend teammate Mark O’Meara are leading, though, unlike The Players Championship, there aren’t 200 stories daily coming out regarding Tiger’s brave battle to play golf with Earl Woods on his mind.
Now, in all honesty, I have no real qualms about golfers picking up some extra bucks playing in some country club tournament. Sure, charities get some money, but it’s not exactly like it’s a prerequisite to have a golf tournament before you can make charitable donations. Nonetheless, it is what it is, and it’s not like it’s hurting anybody.
But can we please keep these sort of excursions in mind a little when the PGA’s finest whine about how overworked they are and how long the season is?
