The Champions Club in Omaha

Omaha is a Golfer's Paradise

TravelGolf.com Staff Report

OMAHA, NE (April 4, 2001) -- Swing into Omaha for a game of golf and you'll see why Nebraskans are addicted. The choices of courses are endless, the prices are affordable, and the wild beauty of the landscape lends itself to a scenic experience. With more public golf courses per capita than any other city with a population of 100,000-plus, over fifty golf courses dot the area in and around Omaha.

Course designers, for over 100 years, have utilized Nebraska's rolling hills, lush meadows, gurgling streams, swampy lowlands and natural prairies to create courses that are architecturally pleasing and entertaining enough to challenge your game.

"Whether you are a serious golfer or just play every now and then for fun, Omaha offers a diverse collection of courses that will appeal to people of all skill levels and budgets," said Tim McNeil, Deputy Director of the Omaha Convention & Visitors Bureau.

For the golfer interested in a true taste of eastern Nebraska golf, play the award-winning Quarry Oaks course tucked into the hills of the Platte River Valley on the edge of Omaha in Ashland.

In 1999, Quarry Oaks was ranked the number one public golf course in Nebraska by Golf Digest magazine, and hole #17 was recognized by the magazine as one of the top holes in the United States in March, 2000.

Prefer to go with the popular vote? According to a Discover Omaha.com web survey, among Omaha golfers' favorite public courses in the Omaha-metro area is Woodland Hills, an 18-hole championship course, located a short drive west of Omaha in Eagle, Nebraska. Golf Digest magazine apparently agreed with public opinion poll and gave the course four and half stars out of a possible five.

Built on an award winning tree farm, pine tree-lined fairways and over ten acres of wild flowers and grasses add to the color of this beautiful course. Another Omaha favorite is Indian Creek.

This club has three nine hole courses that are played in three eighteen-hole combinations. Indian Creek golfers will find long, demanding holes with plenty of water and sand bunkers protecting the greens and fairways.

Of historical appeal, several private clubs are the distinguished gentlemen of the facilities found in Omaha, and are part of the traditional social network and culture of Omaha. One hundred-year old Field Club is a stately fixture as is the hilly terrain of Happy Hollow and the "pillar of Nebraska golf" Omaha Country Club.

Golfers seeking to break a record or maybe play the best game of their lives could start at the appropriately-named Miracle Hills Golf Course. This public golf facility recorded golf's longest hole-in-one, 444 yards, at Hole # 10 by Robert Mitera on a windy October day.

On the PGA tournament circuit, the prestigious Champions Club designed by leading golf course architect Jeffrey Brauer, is an aesthetically appealing, yet challenging 200-acre course.

Golf enthusiasts interested in seeing the private course played should attend the PGA Buy.Com Omaha Classic, July 30-August 6. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the Tournament Office, (402) 399-1800 or online at www.golf.discoveromaha.com.

Sprawling across over 350 acres, The Players Club designed by legendary PGA golfer Arnold Palmer will entertain golfers of all skill levels. With natural wetlands, grassy knolls, meandering waterways and sculptured bunkers, the Players Club is a premier golf club that shouldn't be missed by anyone playing through Omaha.
