Anyone wanna talk more rap music and golf?
A brief stop watching some music videos this evening got me to thinking about Tiger’s fall from being a common reference in rap songs.
Think about it, when he first burst on the scene, Puffy was making videos that took place on golf courses, Jay-Z was referencing Tiger left and right in lyrics. He was the phenom rappers would liken themselves to more often than not.
Maybe they too have noticed Tiger isn’t as dominant as he was – or he’s just played out. It seems like when rap first started making hand-over-fist in royalties and more artists were moving into the ‘burbs, they were almost giving the golf lifestyle a shot. We used to see them clowning on the golf course from time to time, MTV would even get in the act and host outrageous celebrity golf tournaments where they would shockingly wear jeans and have hats on crooked.
Now, golf is back to being an old, lame, white dude’s game again. In other words, “whack". Lebron James has taken over the role of phenom, lyrically. Hip-hoppers always closely link themselves to sports and it looks like golf had its shot to cross-market and it didn’t happen. If Kanye West stops wearing polos, it’s over, ya’ll.
I guess the queston is: even if Tiger was winning everywhere, would Billboard even care? Maybe he’s just old news in the music world – and went out with the boybands in 2001.
