FIRST NINE HOLES OF CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF WILL DEBUT MARCH 22 AT RADISSON CABLE BEACH RESORT COURSE - Radisson is the Island's Only Resort to Offer All Inclusive, Unlimited Golf - Introductory Paragraph: NASSAU, BAHAMAS (March 20, 2002) - The remarkable transformation of Nassau's first public golf course to a resort-quality championship course will be unveiled and ready for play on March 22, 2002, when the Radisson Cable Beach Resort Golf Course completes the re-design of the front nine holes. November 2002 will mark the opening of the back nine, as well as new and upgraded facilities including a driving range lit for night play and the renovated clubhouse. Designed to be "resort friendly" yet challenging for all levels of play, the re-design includes a reshaping of the course's fairways, repositioning of greens, water-lined holes through two-thirds of the course and new hazards. Better year-round playing conditions are insured by the addition of special salt-tolerant grass (Salam Paspalum) that can withstand the salty sea breezes, tropical climate and still maintain lush conditions year-round, offering a ball lie that is second to none. Remaining Body of Text: This major initiative comes under the eye of golf course designer and consultant Fred M. Settle, Jr. of International Golf Design, Inc. Since 1960, Settle has designed, developed and operated golf courses around the world independently and in collaboration with Arnold Palmer Golf Management and International Management Group (IMG), where he served as senior vice president of IMG-Asia Pacific. "The philosophy behind the new course design was to create an outstanding resort course that would be enjoyable and challenging to every levels of play-particularly the resort golfer," says Settle. Low handicappers looking for length, long carries and a game of challenge can play from the back tees, while the beginner golfer hitting from the front tees will avoid all carries and find wide open fairways, large greens guarded by mounds for containment and a minimum of sand bunkers. "In other words there are a set of tees for all skill levels. The greens will be large and receptive with a minimum of undulation but will be fun to putt. And, approach shots to the greens will give the feel of hitting down to them, with an element of containment to keep balls from running astray," adds Settle. Fairways will have containment to separate each hole, as well as increased undulation for improved drainage. Holes one and 10 will now have shared greens with a sand trap separating them, and the new design will create the appearance of a small island surrounded by water dividing the holes. With the re-design, some holes will be elevated as much as 10 feet. The transformation from old to new positions #1 and #10 just steps from the clubhouse so guests can stop at the turn for a quick lunch or refreshments. With four tees to play from, the course plays to a par 72 and offers 6,475 yards from the championship tees; 6,131 yards from the blue; 5,843 yards from the resort tees and 5,168 yards from the front tees. Throughout the time when the back nine is under renovation, golfers will replay the front to make a full round. The re-positioning of fairways and greens dramatically changes the look and feel of the Emmet Devereaux-designed course, built back in 1928. "With this being the first renovation to the course since its inception, it will establish Cable Beach and Nassau as a new destination for avid golfers, particularly the growing breed of players who consider golf when planning their vacation," notes Brian Meister, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Radisson Cable Beach Resort. "Furthermore, Radisson Cable Beach Resort is the only resort in the Bahamas to offer free, unlimited golf as one of its many all-inclusive features, making it the greatest value on the market for the enthused golfer." The Radisson Cable Beach Resort in Nassau, The Bahamas, redefines the concept of a tropical vacation by being "The Only All Inclusive that offers its guests MORE" - More entertainment, More dining, More fun and More hospitality. With six restaurants, five bars and lounges, a seven-acre waterscape, a multitude of land and water activities, and a welcoming feeling that is as warm as the Bahamian sun, an all-inclusive vacation at the 700-room resort offers everything a guest looks forward to - and more. Nelson continued to share his profound knowledge of the game, as both a teacher and analyst, with six-time PGA Player of the Year Tom Watson and 1964 Player of the Year Ken Venturi as two of his prized pupils. Nelson helped to develop the TPC Four Seasons at Los Colinas, site of the Verizon Byron Nelson Classic, into a world-class facility.
As the only PGA TOUR event named in honor of a professional golfer, the Byron Nelson Classic traditionally boasts one of the strongest fields, due to the respect and admiration that today's players have for Nelson. For More Information.
