Crystal Springs Golf Club
About
Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg touts a reputation of being not only the most challenging golf course in New Jersey, but also one of the most challenging layouts east of the Mississippi. The site filled with water after its use as a limestone quarry in 1929, which formed the natural springs on the 10th hole that the course is named after. The layout is definitely a shot-maker's course. Carefully sculpted mounding that frames the fairways and greens defines each hole. There is also tall and gnarly rough treacherously guarding the tight fairways. The golf course sits just a few miles from New Jersey's highest point, sprawling across an undulating terrain that makes it difficult to find an even lie. One of the most notably difficult, and subsequently the most talked about, holes is the 11th. The hole is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Windsor Quarry.

Stupidest design I have ever played
I don't mind a hard golf course ; but this one is just a stupid layout. The dude that cut the pins today was a sadist!
I am not good enough to enjoy this course
if you are an average to below average golfer like me you should skip this course. I would recommend spending a bit more and playing Wild Turkey right next door. This course with its impossible pin placement, moguls and bunkers, water hazards and impossible thick rough make this a very hard course. I spent way to much time searching thick rough for my ball and you almost never have a flat lie even on the fairway. You are always shooting on an angle or blind or over a bunker. Pin placements are evil too some impossible to hit even for the best golfers. Overall the pace of play was a bit slow too. The course is not too long but I wont be playing again the cost is good but there are many other options that are more fun in my opinion. Try Wild Turkey, Black Bear, Great Gorge or Farmstead if you want to play in Sussex county.
The value at $43 via a GolfNow Hot Deal was pretty good. , but the staff yelled at my foursome from on top of the hill to get off of the course. The started did not mention it and we did not appreciate the aggressiveness of the staff in yelling at us. With that said, this is a typical course that runs through many backyards and avoiding houses will be a challenge for the errant golfer. The moguls on both sides are more like large hills that turned into a game of where's waldo? when looking for balls. Decent course, very fun par 3 on back 9, but cart path-only made this an endurance test and greatly reduced the experience. Will not be back.
Great Fall deal.
Overall, this was a fun day. Crystal Springs requires your game to be sharp as it is tight and played long in the cold, fall air. Have to be on right tier in greens too.
Great course, but a money grab
I have played Crystal Springs many times. For all the headaches it causes you because of its difficulty, it's still fun to play. The conditions were great, greens were perfectly smooth and fairly quick. I always recommend it, but remember that you'll very likely shoot higher than you do elsewhere.
With all that said, this day felt like a money grab. $70 is too much for Crystal Springs. Tee times are packed 10 minutes apart which hurts pace of play. Many of the tees were way up so the course was not playing it's true yardage. On some holes the tips, blue and white tees were all grouped together. Just an absolute joke of a course setup. Felt like it was silly season out there, except with premium pricing.
No ball washers or water coolers and they still had the stupid metal piece in the holes. Aren't we over this by now? Nobody is getting the virus from touching a flag stick, hole, ball washer or water cooler that sit exposed to UV rays all day long.
If you're going to reduce amenities and not make it feel normal, you can't be charging a premium. The prices NJ courses are charging for a round of golf this year are absurd. I haven't played many of my favorites because of this and I won't be back to Crystal/Wild Turkey/Ballyowen until they bring their pricing back down to a reasonable level.
Where are the rangers?
A beautiful November day but three hours to play the front nine and we had 4.30 minutes of daylight when we teed off and only got in 14 holes. Not a ranger seen all day... It is hard with leaves down to find balls but they said they were full from 6.30 pm on and so why are there no rangers on the course to help move people along.. Some blind tee shots saw the group behind us hit right into us on several occasions. Great course but disappoint day
Awesome course
We got a hot deal and played this course for $55. Really challenging course but beautiful and very interesting.
