TPC San Antonio's AT&T Oaks Course, designed by Greg Norman and player consultant Sergio Garcia, features narrow fairways and difficult green complexes, not to mention loads of large bunkers. The Oaks plays on gently rolling land, and there is less than 100 feet of difference between the high and low point of the course.

Two of 2010's most anticipated golf courses officially opened in January: TPC San Antonio's AT&T Oaks course and AT&T Canyons course. The Oaks was designed by Greg Norman and consultant Sergio Garcia, while the Canyons was designed by TPC's favorite architect, Pete Dye, and consultant Bruce Lietzke. It's a great time to be a golfer in the Lone Star State with glitzy new courses opening at a rapid rate in a Tarrant-Dallas-Collin County golf corridor north of the D-FW Metroplex and in the burgeoning growth sector surrounding Austin. The boom has even reached such South Plains areas as Childress and to a Tom Doak-design at Texas Tech in Lubbock.
From the Hill Country to South Padre Island to the huge Houston metro area, golf is growing in Texas.

Embarrassing. Disgusting. Sad. Those are just a few of the words you hear from San Antonio area golfers when you ask them about the proposed PGA Village and the PGA of America's recent decision to pull out from the project. I have to agree - with both the golfers and the PGA's decision.

San Antonio golfers might be bummed about the recent cancellation of the PGA Village and the golf courses that were promised, but no worries. Olympia Hills and SilverHorn still more than make up for it. In 2001, Olympia Hills was selected No. 4 "Best New Affordable Public Golf Course" in America by Golf Digest. Public golf courses were rated on shot value, design variety, memorability, aesthetics and playability. Olympia Hills was the only course in Texas to make any of the magazine's lists.

There are times in today's world of glitzy, service-oriented $150 daily-fee courses, with GPS on the carts and rock music piped into the practice range, that one just longs for golf like it was played in the 1920s. Do yourself a favor. Support your inner-city municipal. Find the most historic, old-style muny in your city and try it.

The land was deemed “hilly, rocky and valueless” in 1840, when Horace Beall, a private and physician in the Republic of Texas Army, was deeded the hilltop land that is now part of the Westin La Cantera Resort.

Ed Wiseman first walked the land that is now home to the Hyatt Hill Country Resort in 1933 as a young cowboy from LaVernia in Wilson County, Texas - a place his family had farmed and ranched since 1851. But Wiseman found this 2,700 acres in west San Antonio even more special than his home.
