Destination: Toronto
Toronto is one of the world's most multicultural and exciting cities to visit. While it is Canada's most populous metropolitan area, plenty of accessible golf can be enjoyed for any wallet size.
You can book tee times at more than 200 golf courses in the greater Toronto area, which includes Mississauga to the west and Niagara Falls to the east toward the border.
Stanley Thompson was born and raised in Toronto and caddied at the historic Toronto Golf Club, which was established in 1876. Later nicknamed "The Toronto Terror," Thompson went on to design golf courses for 40 years, mostly in Canada. Today, the PGA Tour stops in Toronto each summer for the RBC Canadian Open, hosted on a rotation of high-end clubs -- that all offer at least limited public play -- such as Jack Nicklaus' first golf course design, Glen Abbey Golf Club.
With so many corporate golf outings in the area, upscale daily-fee clubs cater especially to large group functions. That's the case at clubs such as Lionhead Golf & Country Club, which boasts a member-for-the-day experience on its Legends and Masters courses in Brampton.
From Toronto it's about a two-hour drive to Niagara Falls, which has made a name for itself in recent years as being a golf destination and a popular weekend getaway for Torontonians. Golf courses such as Royal Niagara Golf Club and John Daly's Thundering Waters Golf Club are among the dozen-plus popular plays when not taking in the falls or action in the casino.

Like the journey to get there, Dragon's Fire Golf Club in Carlisle, Ontario is winding, circuitous and pretty. It all comes with a bit of tasteful frustration because the layout can, well, burn you if you're not playing well. The golf course, between 30 and 45 minutes southwest of Toronto proper, was a real beast when it first opened in 2008, but it's been tamed a bit as it grows in and matures.

In Niagara Falls, "falls view" is a marketing term that deserves a spot right alongside "Tastes Great, Less Filling" or "Just Do It." Every hotel claims to have one - only, it's really not that big of a deal. Often literally. Avoid the falls-view hype and use the money you save to play the area's high-end golf options like The Rees Jones Course at Grand Niagara.
