RE: RE: my guide to golf in MB!! January 15, 2007, 12:41 am

by Matt H
World Tour is overrated, nice conditions, but since i know the reasl holes i walked away very unimpressed for my money. Thistle i played once conditions were just ok that summer, but a great layout. It iw WORTH a top 10! Oyster Bay doesnt impress me much. I like the one signature hole, but there rest seemed ordinary. Conditions are spotty. Tigers Eye was a GREAT TRACK!! TIM CATE IS AMAZING. HOWEVER! I didnt enjoy the pricks int he clubhouse, and the rangers kept bugging us. I love the people at Barefoot. Rivers Edge, and the Glens Group! They kill themselves for their golfers. Dunes Club is pretty cool. #9 is fun, and the entire back is a fun ride! The fist 8 are nice but nothing too scenic, but #9 makes up for it. Any other questions? Def my opinion, i want to play brunswick and prestwick this summer, i hear nice things about both, and they are very fair priced!

I'm planning a trip to MB in early June and have three rounds scheduled...I'd love anyone's thoughts. We are playing at Heathland, The Witch, and Glen Dornoch.

Hey thinks Matt for the Info. I plan to play. Caledonia, Tiger's Eye, Thistle, Oyster Bay and Grand Dunes Resort Course. In that order. I would like to fit one more round in but our group is split over the last course. Half want to play "World Tour" and the other half Barefoot Fazio. Last year they played the "Love Course" and they were not that impressed. The guys are mid to high handicappers. Everyone shoots 80 to 110 with the average being 95 to 100..Anymore information you have on nice courses where the scenery is stunning adn the play is not to demanding from the white tees we are interested...Thanks again..

Tony...where are you staying. Caladonia and Thistle are about 2 hours apart. All the courses you picked are top notch

Golf Course Selections December 19, 2006, 11:06 pm

by Tony
I have reserved the following courses in order. Caledonia, Tigers Eye, Thiste, Oyster Bay, Grand Dunes. All are ranked in golf digest. Is this a good group. they all seem to be a little different. Going in July. In the past I've played Legends Heathland, Arrowhead, Wildwing Avocet, Indigo Creek, Wicked Stick, Barefoot Love, Farmstead, Waterway Hills, River Oaks, Azeala Sands, Wizard. as for the course I already Played I would rank them the following.
1. Arrowhead
2. Wildwing Avocet
3. Barefoot Love
4. Heathland
5. Wizard
6. Waterway Hills
7. Wicked Sticks
8. indigo Creek
9. River Oaks
10. Azeala Sands
With the new courses I plan to play how would you rank them and why?
I also researched Heritage but everyone says Caledonia is better but similar, is this true. Others have compared Tidewater to Oyster bay in scenery, but Oyster bay is cheaper the tour operators say you will not be disappointed with Oyster Bay, do you agree?
Thistle I'm told is unique and very nice, Grand dunes is wide open and fun to play? Tigers eye is supposed to be a no miss course. Is that so? and finally wanted to play world tour but is it overated, and is the time of play 5 hours? and answers to any of these questions would be most helpful.. sorry for the essay...

I hope this helps…….
I have been going to Myrtle for 16 years now. We started as a group of 12 and now it’s 20. I have played most of the courses that Myrtle has to offer. I have played all the courses on your schedule.
Ranking: Oyster Bay, Caledonia, Thistle, Grande Dunes and Tigers Eye.
Oyster Bay: exceptionally fair, demands concentration and strategy. Bring a camera. Best value on your list.
Caledonia: better but similar……True. This is a keeper.
Thistle: Played it when it first opened. I had a hard time getting my group to go back because of all the water. I liked it a lot. Scottish pub and collection of golf memorabilia is awesome. Play all 27 holes…….
Grande Dunes: Great course …..Best fairways you will see in Myrtle Beach. Hit them low and hard. Fairways will give you +30 to 50 yards. Have fun.
Tigers Eye: Ok. Played once! Not in my top 25.
Recommendations:
Drop: Tigers Eye first and then Thistle.
Add: # 1 Pawleys Plantation… This is one of the most scenic courses you will ever play in Myrtle Beach. It’s just south of Myrtle Beach in Pawleys Island. Can you tell I like it? It will be a difficult course if you let it. I would play it every year if I could. This is a must play………It would be # 1 on my list.
Add: # 2 Glen Dornoch…Hidden gem!!! Plays along the Intracoastal Waterway. Has a great feel to it. This could be your lowest score of the week or not. After your round you can sit out on the elevated deck, eat your lunch and watch the eighteenth green. Possibly cheaper than Thistle.
New Ranking if you go with my recommendations:
Pawleys Plantation
Oyster Bay
Glen Dornoch
Caledonia
Grande Dunes
Other favorites for the future….Long Bay…The Witch…True Blue and Tidewater.
Have Fun,
Dan

golf in winter November 17, 2006, 11:09 pm

by J-C
Hi,
I'm from Quebec, Canada. We're planning to be in MB during Christmas time. I know it won't be very warm but is it playable? We'll be at Sheraton Broadway Plantation. Anybody have been there before? Thank you

Hi J-C,
I travel to Myrtle Beach every year around Christmas to play golf. I'll say that the weather can be unpredictable, but the average high temp. at that time is 59 degrees. I've been in shorts several times, but I've also played in the snow once! 90% of the time, though, the weather is great for golf and the prices are a real steal at this time of year. I love it!

MB golf in November October 16, 2006, 7:42 pm

The boys and Dad are heading down at the end of November for some golf....any recommendations on solid golf courses that appeal to all handicaps. Is it better to book golf individually or as a package deal (only want golf). Any times of day better than others? What is the weather like at that time of year (Nov. 26-30)? Thanks.

Hello. I've been playing golf in Myrtle Beach in October for 5 years. Just returned from a trip last weekend. I'll recommend the following courses: these are all incredible courses that you will love. 1. Caledonia 2. Legends-Moorland course 3. True Blue 4. Barefoot-Love course 5. TPC 6. Pawleys Plantation 7. Tiger's Eye 8. Glen Dornoch 9. River's Edge 10. Grande Dunes 11. Heritage 12. International World Tour 13. Barefoot-Fazio 14. Barefoot-Dye course 15. The Witch 16. Arrowhead 17. King's North
These aren't the cheaper course, that's for sure. However, if you want some incredible golf, these are the ones. I would recommend you book your rounds through a scheduler. I hope this information is helpful for you.....MK

My brother-in-law and I just got back from a trip we booked through myrtlebeachtravel.com and couldn't have been happier. I just didn't want to take the time to call a ton of courses to compare rates and availability + we had no clue as to what the top courses there are. These guys set up the whole deal for us and gave us a super itinerary, a real mix of golf.

river hills rudness October 14, 2006, 12:43 pm

hi everyone, my group and i were in myrtle beach the last week of sept 2006. our package was great. the courses we played were fantastic. fantastic except for river hills. there were 15 of us. when we arrived, and we were early, the starters clapped his hands and said "let get moving guys". remember we were early, i went into the pro shop as the guys got out their bags, put on their shoes. i did ask if we could play 5 3-somes no problem. no problem until i got back to the starter's cage, the rudness of the starter told me no 3-somes. you will go off as a 4 some, 4 some, 4 some and 3 some, and that half would go off the front 9 and other half off the back 9. i told him the staff in the pro shop said we could go off as 5 s-somes, which he said go off as i told you. he also said cart path only, we have over seeded the fairways. this guy was very rude about us playing there, almost started a fight with my guys, can't blame them. thank god we were drinking yet. we all asked why the back and front 9 pairings we said we have many goups out, we were the only ones in the parking lot! we didn't see any other persons until we were on the 6th hole. guys and girls, if you go to this course be ready for the rudness of the starters. the course insultants did follow us around and told us to pick up the pace, remember we were doing cart path only. we compleated our rounds in 4 hours because we played a scramble. my suggestion is go to another course.

Fran,
River Hills was also a nightmare with my group. 3 years ago they lost their greens in February when my group takes their trip. This was our first round and when we got to checkin they told us of a fungus that killed all their grass. They had painted the sand green on the greens. They told us if we played a couple holes and didn't like it they would refund our money. We drove 7 hours to be told we would get a refund? No advance warning, no offer of a raincheck for another year, no chance to change the booking a week out. Very disappointing. We were thinking of adding them at some future date but not after your post. Thanks again.
Mike
