Chris Baldwin October 11, 2005, 11:59 am

by John Bernard
I'm amused at the arrogance that allows a lesser talent to criticize a greater talent. Writers like Baldwin assume for themselves the right to determine whether an athlete such as John Daly or Phil Mickelson are using their talents properly. Had Baldwin given Daly his talent, he may have a "say" on how he uses it. However, whether Daly acquired his skill through practice or just picked it up in a pawn shop, the guy has the right to play any damn way he pleases.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This guy is " Tin Cup " with a certificate.

Chris, you owe John Daly an apology. But then again he wouldn't care about what you printed, he's a golfer, one who can get into a playoff with Tiger or VJ. I'd love to see you play Charles Price or Lorne Rubenstein in that kind of situation. John should be congratulated for what he accomplished, you should go to New Orleans and take one of those bonus jobs at Burger King!

Please respect that that is the way John Daly plays. Sure he missed a couple key putts but his "system" got him there, in contention. If he was as methodical as Phil he would have finished 30th. He's like Lee Trevino was and please don't change him. We don't need another Phil, or David, or ????
Let us enjoy JOHN DALY while we can. Share his successes and congratulate him, he's great.

Good observation, Gary!! John's "system" was utilized very well for four days over a very demanding course. John is to be commended for the way he managed his game for 72 of the seventy-four holes played. He absolutely played spectacular golf. His three-putts on Sunday, at #17 in regulation play and on the final hole of the playoff, were missed shots...period. Missed at crucial times, but missed nonetheless. I'm more concerned about celebrating John's ongoing "work in progress" to overcome the demons in his life, and how he has recaptured his ability to showcase his immense talent, rather than denouncing him for missing putts.

A Gimme October 11, 2005, 11:05 am

by James Tousignant
John Daly is highly touted for his lack of respect for the game and lack-luster appearance, but the man is talented no question. That aside, I believe that the so called 'gimme' is a put that everyone has missed one time or another. I respect John for the fact that he is a 'ready' golfer. He doesn't take 3-4 practice swings, he doesn't make sure that it's absolutely, positively quiet and motionless before he plays his ball; John just wants to play golf. I think John sees the shot before he hits or decides on a line and executes. I commend him for his 'Grip it and Rip it' mentality, there are a number of golfers that need to check their pace of play, it will be much more enjoyable for everyone. I damn John for missing that putt for one reason, I wanted to see more golf and have Tiger or himself win by a birdie or better.

I love to watch John Daly play golf, he truly does not feel pressure. In fact, if any thing he seems lackadasical about the whole affair. He is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. He uses his great talent to put himself into positions to win, then mentally wanders off the course and hands it away. The only drama seems to be how he'll collapse the next time!!??

I find it amusing that you decide to talk about Daly's "talent" after one great tournament.
I mean, what did you think of Daly when he failed to make the top-100 of the money list about five/six years in a row?
Did he have "more talent than Tiger" back then...or is he now just an easy target for middle-Americans who don't like his 'different' way of life?
I think the latter.
Funny how the entire crowd loved Daly, yet you ridicule him. Pathetic.

WELL, WELL! How things change. No mention of Doug Saunders miss to lose the Open, just a tirade of verbal diahorea against the 'grip it and ripp it' lovably adventurous John Daly!
Reminds me of Nick the Greek's blurb that ended his career. Best of Luck in your future as I am sure you will need it.
John Daly played well, pity about that last Putt because he had Millions riveted to the TV in anticipation of more excitement that sadly wasn't forthcoming. Golf has often been a cruel game when least expected which is why we fellow Golfers love it and its good players so much.
Not many will ever appreciate what you wrote believe me. Bye, Bye!
