RE: Can't we all just root for Michelle Wie? January 17, 2007, 5:17 pm

by Dan angelini
Who wrote this article? Yes I must say Michelle Wie does have talent. But the PGA Tour is for men. I'm sorry. She is taking the spot of men who deserve a chance to play on this tour, she's stealing the spotlight from those who deserve to be under it. You pro - Wie people out there must be running out of excusses to support her. She's still young, she's just a kid. Well so is Tadd Fujikawa, an other Hawaiian golfer, who at only sixteen finished top 20 in the sony open, and at fifteen played in a major. We should be talking about this guy for the next few months. Not Michelle Wie who can't even come close to making the cut on the OGA Tour. Listen I think Michelle Wie is a great young golfer, I really do, but she should take things a bit slower, finish school, play the LPGA Tour, win some events on LPGA, then check back to the PGA tour.

Wie at Sony January 17, 2007, 2:50 pm

Chris;
Your statement: "She hit one fairway in the Sony's first round. That's more than double none.", is flawed mathematically. 2 x 0 = 0. It would be more correct if you would've said that 5.6% of fairways hit is one hole better than 0.0%. Keep it going; she has earned it.

if wie is allowed to play on the PGA tour then let a man play on the ladies tour. after all that's fair isn't it.she plays from the mens tee the male competitor would play from the ladies tee. that's fair. maybe we should make the male qualify fir the ladies event . that's fair.if you want to play on any tour then qualify for it. then we could have seniors playing with the ladies. sounds fair to me. or we could keep everybody where they belong . but that wouldn't make any money or sell any newspapers and that is definitely not fair.

You're right, everyone could play on the LPGA or PGA, but the reason that men can't play on the LPGA and women can play on the PGA is the letter (L) before the PGA. That's what Wie says.
She says that nobody can stop her from playing on the PGA tour, because it doesn't say the MPGA tour. All this crap could be put into prospective if we put the letter (M) in front of PGA. The only thing is that like you said the TV ratings would'nt be as high if Wie couldn't play with the men. Also, when they polled the men about Wie playing on the mens tour the biggest per cent of the men interviewed said they watched her because of her short skirts and body parts. End of story.

Exactly, but show me a "Lady" on the tour and they can keep the title...

Chris:
This is American sports, and if you accept the big money, you get the heat if you don't perform. I'm sure some even take delight in Michelle's misfortunes because of jealousy, which is wrong. When she accepted money, she should have known or been told that Nike, the networks, and others would seek an immediate "return on investment" regardless of the consequences. Her parents take that responsibility.
I hope her "coaches" include a sports psychologist, because if she isn't very strong, I would guess the events of late will have a damaging result.
To me, I'm tired of seeing her. A great talent, yes, but she shuns the women tour, and we all know what they say about a woman's scorn. If she was winning anywhere, all would sing her praises, but she hasn't won.
I hope she makes it through all this, but as I said, with the money comes the consequences.
For me, please go to Stanford and perhaps start with sports psychology.

Michelle Wie (and perhaps her folks) put her out there in the glare of the kleig lights. You can't expect people not to notice the result. Golf writers are human beings (at least most of us). They know a real underdog when they see one. I don't see Wie as an underdog. She is beautiful, talented, and opportunistic. The plan just has not worked so far. Back in the old days, another woman got noticed by playing against men. Remember Babe Zaharias?

Are you on glue? Wie continues to look like a complete idiot every time she tries to tee it up with the men. She is trying to get the glory by dumb luck (making the cut line). Bottom line is just like everyone else she should WORK her way to the top of the LPGA then maybe shoot for the PGA. I'm sick of all the coverage she takes away from the men who make the PGA great to watch.............

Chris has it right. We need to root for the underdog, in this case it's Michelle trying to break through on the PGA Tour. Michelle has broken the mold for what males think about women golfers. She has transformed women's golf and will continue to do so. So, why can't the nay sayers just let it be? She has earned the respect of everyone (males) that have had the opportunity and pleasure to play a round with her. I wish Michelle great success at Stanford and on the LPGA Tour.

For all the ways you called her a dunce (so to speak), couldn't you even look up how to SPELL Stanford (not Standford, you dunce!)????

It's not that we have stopped rooting for her, it's that we now feel sorry for her. Someone should grab her father and give him a good hard slap. Get the kid to where she can learn and grow as a golfer, and build her confidence. Once proven there, meaning the LPGA, come back and try and kick the crap out of the boys. It's criminal what her handlers, her father particularly, are doing to her.
I can only hope that Tadd Fujikawa doesn't face the same fate.

Michelle Wie needs to stop listening to whoever is telling her to tee it up against the men and concentrate on winning on her own tour. Worry about beating Annika, Paula, Julie, instead of making the cut at a PGA event. Win the Womens U.S. Open and pass on the chance to qualify for the mens open. There's no denying she has talent, but lets face it, she stands no chance against the likes of Vijay, Tiger, Phil, Jim (Furyk), Ernie, Retief when a major title is on the line. The intensity these guys bring to the table will melt the lip gloss off her lips quicker than she can generate an excuse for her poor play.

Root for Wie? No. But, I don't root against her. It's getting old. Now she says she's not trying to make the cut but "learn from the men." What? Who came up with that script? Doesn't everyone play to win? Wie is everything that's wrong with golf - and everyone is afraid to say it. Faldo skillfully dodged a bullet when asked about her chances and her game. It's not her fault. She's probably a very nice kid. I blame the machine, Nike mostly. It was cute when she was 14 - she was better too!
Just to clarify her finishing position at the Sony - she was the last place pro golfer - the 2 she beat were a 51 and 47 year old instructors! What the media won't spin for Wie.

Wie is a Woman.
She should not be playing in a Men's tournament, even if she is competitive.
My view on the issue is that there is a discrimination factor if she isn't allowed to play. I compare it to the same sex marriage issue. This is something that is not right, but allowed because we don't want to offend someone. This attitude will hurt society in the long run.
