Can someone help us out? Traveling to MB for the first time with 2 adults and 1 teenage son(on the High School golf team). Any 'must golf' courses? Looking for a wonderful full week of golf during spring break 2007. Any 'must stay' condo or best area to be located? Looking for luxury accomodations. Thanks, Sharon

I have played over 40 courses in Myrtle and have some suggestions:
#1 Barefoot Love. Lots of options to attack greens. Wide landing areas,"Throwback greens" in terrific shape.
#2 Caledonia. Immaculate, no homes, terrific marsh views.
#3 Tiger Eye. Eye candy with a flag.
#4 Tide Water. World Class Golf
#5 Grande Dunes. World Class Resort style golf with possibly best practice facility.
#6 Oyster Bay. Best value on the strand with terrific views, fun carries, and reasonable prices.
#7 Glen Dornach. Tough and built much like Rivers Edge.
#8 Rivers Edge. Very challenging course not recommended for high handicappers. This Arny Palmer design has perhaps the best finishing hole on the Grand Strand.
#9 Heritage. Good mix of water, woods to create a country club feel.
#10 Thistle. This is a links style course with wide landing areas and excellent greens.
Keep in mind these were played over 10 years span. Dont let anyone book you into "The Oaks" as they have a host of issues in my view.
Good luck,
Mike

Play any of the following:
Caladonia
Heritage
Rivers Edge
Lions Paw (think this is better than Tigers Eye)
Tidewater
Glen Dornoch
I have never played the Barefoot courses

This might bring out some good responses...We've been coming to Myrtle for 18 years...We're now all in our late 50's and getting tired of being beat up with the LENGTH and 'target golf' of many of the newer courses...So, for all you residents and visiting regulars like us, price not a problem, what would you play in the 5800 to 6000 yard range from the WHITES?...OLD or NEW doesn't matter but condition and service is utmost on the list...Thanks in advance.

I am going to MB in October to play at Black Bear, Brunswick Plantation, Diamondback and Wicked Stick golf courses. I was invited (at no cost to me)and had no input on these courses, so I am justlooking for any input on quality of the courses.
Thanks

Black Bear is a decent course but not particularly interesting and is a little "fuzzy" around the grooming edges.
Have not played Brunswick Plantation.
DiamondBack used to be called Bucks Creek. As Bucks Creek it was a fun course in nice shape. As Diamondback, it has lost some of its appeal to me with little to recommend it at this time.
Wicked Stick is a John Daly design that he did shortly after his British Open win. Big John is a great guy to party with but not a serious designer. This is wide open and on a windy or raw, rainey day, I would recommend this course as it is very "British or Scottish in its experience. However, there are hidden pot hole bunkers in the center of a fairway to gobble up 280 yard drives. You dont' know they are there until you come up on them. How hateful is that?
There are wonderful courses in MB but these were likely picked on a budget.
Remember, a bad day of golf is better than a good day of work, right?
Mike

I Thought Crowe Creek was the old Bucks Creek. I hated that course because they put man made lakes in the driving area's and the shots we blind so you did not relize you where in the water until you got to your ball.
Yes these are low buget courses Wicked stick is about the best but little character.
Can someone provide a top ten. I 'm going back in May.
Thanks,

Neither Diamondback or Crowe Creek used to be Buck Creek, they are fairly new courses. Aberdeen is the old Buck Creek, they changed it a few years ago when it flooded after a hurricane.
Diamondback is an OK course on Hwy 9, Crowe Creek is an excellent course on Hwy 17 in N.C.

| Suggestions for Golfing In August 2006... |
July 25, 2006, 2:16 am |
by Mike
I'm heading to Myrtle in about a week and was hoping someone would have some suggestions about what courses to play. I'm a poor college student so I'm trying to keep my price range between $150-$200 for three rounds. Hopefully some of you have played there recently and can give me an updated report on what courses are in good shape, scenic, etc. Some I have in mind is The Witch, Tiger's Eye, Thistle, Heritage, a Legends course, River's Edge, Oyster Bay.....also, a friend of mine is playing once and doesn't want to spend too much because he's not very good, so I was thinking Diamond Back...I would really appreciate any feedback that you might have...thanks a lot

I've been going to the beach for over 25 years with 7 other golfers. Our top 10 is based on the courses that are in top shape, we get good service and they have no, or very few houses and condo's. They are:
1. Glen Dornach
2. Caldonia
3. True Blue
4. Rivers Edge
5. The Thistle (this is a real hidden gem with 10 minute tee times).
6. Tidewater (lot's of $$$$)
7. The Witch
8. The Players Club (Pete Dye course that used to be called the Gauntlet)
9. Tiger's Eye
10. Barefoot (Love course)

Glen Dornoch Number One?? There is no way it is better than Rivers Edge, Tidewater...not that much $$$ in the Summer, Its not better than Fazio BF, Or Love BF. Fazio Barefoot might be the best course down there. Tidewater, Rivers Edge and The Dunes Club are up there, with Caledonia and True Blue. Where is the Dunes!? Wondeful old tract. Playing the Witch and Willbrook for the first time this Week! Let you ALL know.
What im Playing.
Long Bay
Rivers Edge (2)
Willbrook
Wicked Stick (the old man loves it)
The Witch
Then??
Heather Glen, Arcadian Shores, or River Club
