1st time to MB May 31, 2006, 6:53 am

by Kevin
I have been in contact (via email) with 2 different agents, but Im looking for advice from actual MB "diehards" that are not trying to sell me on their own package, but general advice. questions:
#1. Any particular lodging you recommend, OR DONT recommend. (We prefer to stay in North or Central MB)
#2. What is this surcharge fee I have been seeing some of you discuss?
#3. What courses do you recommend in the North/ Central area.
#4 Do you recommend signing up for a package deal, especially if we plan to play 5 rounds (36 holes for 2 of the days)

yea, i never do the package deal, we stay in the Brigadune adjacent to the Dunes Club, and i usually plan my golf the first day im there. The top 10 courses in MB will all charge 20-60 bucks surcharge. If i were you id get accomadations and golf seperate. Try the Barefoot Courses, if ur willing to pay a little more, you will get ALOT out of your golf, amazing golf, all 4 courses, i like Fazio the best. Those 4 courses are in north Myrtle beach, Tidewater, in Little River SC. DEF WORTH IT! Rivers Edge, in Shallotte NC. well worth the 25 minute drive north on 17. HEather Glen and Glen Dornoch also on the north end of the Grand Strand, Tigers Eye at oean plantation is very nice as well, also on the North End. Long Bay Club is on highway 9, very nice club. new greens, very nice. Hope This Helps

As a frequent MB golfer, i have the thrue top 10. If ANYONE thinks the BAREFOOT COURSES dont deserve to be in the top 10 they are CRAZY! The conditions at these four courses are AMAZING!
1)Tidewater
2)River Edge
3)Dunes Club
4)Fazio Barefoot
5)Tigers Eye
6)Love Barefoot
7)Long Bay Club (post bermuda greens)
8)Caledonia
9)TPC
10)True Blue
I would LOVE some INPUT on River Club, Litchfield, and Willbrook, Heritage, Tradition. Dont get down south much! As you can tell i have a Northern Strand Bias! But my list, IS THE LIST if you want GRADE A Myrtle Beach Golf

Hi Matt,
I cant disagree with your top 10.
You asked about:
River Club-
Willbrook
Heritage and
Tradition
All these courses are southside and all are 4 star tracks in very good shape (when Last I played them a few years back). We stayed at Litchfield plantation and it was excellent with full breakfast daily.
Thanks,
Mike

You have to take a trip to the south. The courses down there are just awesome. River Club is the second best MBN course behind Kings North which is on my top 10 list. tarditions is ok as is willbrook nothing special. litchfield you can pass on. Heritage is a must play GREAT course. pawleys is nice to. hope this helps.

I can't imagine any Barefoot course being in the top ten? The Dunes is the no 1

Are you serious? Barefoot is the best golf community down there. The Fazio and Love are Incredible. The club house is amazing, and the new practice range is great!! outside of Rivers Edge, Tidewater, and the Dunes, I dont see nething Touching Fazio's Barefoot course. And love is not far behind!

I like your top ten although I'm not as fond of the Barefoot Courses. We have bee going to MB the past 6 or 7 years & here is my top 10.
#1 River's Edge
#2 Oyster Bay
#3 Pine Lakes
#4 Tigers Eye
#5 Heritage Plantation
#6 Rivers Club
#7 Willbrook Plantation
#8 Maqn O' War
#9 Heather Glen
#10 Wild Wing Woodstork
This past March we played WW Hummingbird. The conditions were bad & we were told that this course will be closing.
other courses we played this year were King's North which we have always enjoyed, but I put it just outside my top 10; River's Edge one of my favorites; Tidewater that gets mixed reviews from my group. I think the houses are much to close; Sandpiper Bay and Myrtle Beach natl West which were good but not great; and a pleasant surprise at Man O' War that everyone liked a lot. Take care!!

I just want to say that I keep hearing everyone make all these wonderful comments at how great River's Edge is. I really think you have to take into account not only the course itself but the time of year you play it. We went back this August and played it for the first time in about 5 years because all we kept hearing was how great it is. Total disappointment. If you can't keep your greens, you definitely don't deserve a top 10. All the other courses we played (Caledonia, Glen Dornoch, Tiger's Eye, and even Carolina National) had great greens for the time of year. River's Edge had one hole closed because the green was such a mess, and cut up greens on all the other holes to make up for it. Such a shame and not great service. We'll never go back.

i have been playing the grand strand courses for 10 years and find it impossible to make a top 10 but without doubt the numbers 1 and 2 are tidewater and rivers edge in either order.i also have a soft spot for glen dornoch and tigers eye..

AZALEA SANDS AND ARCADIAN SHORES ARE ALWAYS IN GREAT SHAPE

RE: RE: Gem in the Rough July 6, 2006, 8:39 pm

by Fred Reeder
Really disapointed in Arcadian Shores since 1998. Fairways unkept and greens in poor shape. Sorry, but this used to be a "regular" stop for our group, but not anymore------
If it improves, let me know.
Thanks, Fred

My husband and I are traveling to MB in May and will only be able to play 2-3 rounds. I'm looking for the best courses for us - our handicaps are between 8-18 and are looking for callenging and scenic courses. What do you recommend as "must courses"?
