In no specific order....
My top ten are Caledonia, Dunes, Tidewater, Kings North, Rivers edge, True Blue, TPC, World Tour, Barefoot Love, and Tigers Eye.

Oh and as for the World Tour, it's an expensive great course if you just think of it as simply that. Don't go in thinking of all the history surrounding the holes. The course is nice don't get me wrong, but taking the holes out of their original environment truely takes away from the actual beauty I think. Besides, the 9 with the 17th at TPC always seems to be closed. My suggestion is don't disrespect St. Andrews. For the cost, I'd rather take a trip back up there when I got home. Granny Clarke's wind and the Swilcan Bridge are just fine in Fife.

While I would definitely agree with papa bear's comments about beauty, I knocked what Jason felt because he wasn't being helpful to the people that actually come on here to ask advice of pro's and con's to MB courses. I like to think if somoene wanted to know a great group of courses to play, they could come here and read some of the comments and not get caught up in "sponsorship" issues that have nothing to do with golf. The one you claim's the best is the one our foursome's been waiting to play 5 years now. It's closed every time we're there for aeration of greens/fairways. Maybe this year since we're going a different week. Without numbering them, for our mates from the UK, I'd say a solid top 5 would be The Dunes Club, Tidewater, Caledonia (hopefully), The Grande Dunes (from the tips as I've already complimented on), and the TPC. If you're willing to take a drive I'd say Porter's Neck is the best course down there period, but it's up near Wilmington and it may have gone private by now. Finally, if you're looking for a quality course with unbelievable greens, Crow Creek is a sleeper (that's for the good Dr). Hope that helps your foursome. I went to Oxford for a term and was able to play Wentworth before the BMW, and then up to St Andrews to play the Old Course before the Open in 05. Love it there. Cheers!

No way!!!!! January 25, 2006, 11:38 am

Love and Dye at Barefoot in top 10?? There must be some sponsorship involved in those picks! Where's Glen Dornoch? Tiger's Eye? Oyster Bay? All 3 are better than anything at Barefoot. Grande Dunes is a boring, overrated course as well. Nothing on the front 9 stands out at all. Top 10 should be:
1)River's Edge
2)Glen Dornoch
3)Tidewater
4)True Blue
5)Pawley's(only because conditions here are terrible-the greens are never watered-but the layout is fantastic!)
6)Tiger's Eye
7)Oyster Bay
8)Caledonia
9)King's North
10)Heritage

I don't want to sound crass or anything, but you're quite hypocritical with your comments. You mention overrated and then say Glen Dornoch should be number 2. Supposedly one of the "best" courses in Myrtle Beach and it wasn't worth pulling in the front entrance. I've played 9 of your top 10, in fact I've played just about every top notch course down there, and your list seems a bit muddled. Pawley's doesn't deserve a top 50. And come on, you must have some sponsorship with the Legends group because Oyster Bay deserved top 10 honors 15 years ago, and the Heritage? Come on. As for standing out, at King's North the only thing I remember was the huge construction equipment on the famous island 12th. Forget "the gambler"...any true golfer can tell you (and ask the workers in the proshop) that's a gimmick hole where a well struck driver off the tee to the normal landing area gives you a much better chance at scoring. All I can say is don't disrespect The Dunes Club or even the TPC by banishing either from a true MB top 10.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've played 120 courses at the beach and I beleive Caledonia is the best, but that's my opinion. you can't knock what others feel, because as youknow you can take 10 golfers out and they all will have different opinions. I also think Rivers Edge and Tidewater are inthe top 3 or 4. I'am going back in April and will play Rivers Edge again. I go twice a year and just love it there. Then again I'am from Conn. where we just got 20 inches of snow.

And by the way, I took offense to your comments about the Grande Dunes. Having no affiliation with the course at all, other than playing it multiple times, I can say that's definitely a top 10. My advice to you sir is play it from the tips, you won't forget a single hole.

Myrtle Beach in March January 17, 2006, 4:39 pm

Which of the Top 10 courses do you think will be dry and in top shape in late March?

MB top 10 January 15, 2006, 2:51 pm

by doug steindl
While I don't think you can put a number on what course is better than the next, I do think one of these does not belong. There are so many great courses in MB I don't think you could clearly say one course is a clear cut number 1. That is each players personal choice. I do think the Grande Dunes is vastly over rated. It may be a great track at some point but lacks any excitement to me. Way too many trees were cleared from this property so that no hole on this course stands out to me. The greens were great but other than that it was a pretty boring experience compared to others at the beach. I would certainly put Oyster Bay, Heritage or Wild Wing Avocet or Falcon cleary ahead of Grande Dunes.

Hey doug,
Can you please give me your opinion on Avocet and Falcon if you had to choose one of the two?
