Actually, Wie's drop was microscopically in error, compared to the 40 yards to the pin. Officials had to use "plumber's twine" to ESTIMATE the damage, which was miniscule, and it's hard to say whether using a (readily available) Nikon laser rangefinder would have pegged a more meaningful result. The fact is, the sacred game of golf was defiled more by Bamberger's presence than his absence, as Michelle Wie's excrutiatingly proper drop at THIS year's Samsung demonstrates.

I'm with you Bumbleberger. Never admit that you screwed up. Just keep denying it. It works.

I am a Journalist and former TV sportscaster. The writers only action should have been writing what he saw. To this day, we realy do not know if he was right. It was determined the next day after the last round and as i recall, Wie and her caddy both disagreeed with the final ruling by the oficial who took them back to the spot and recreated what happened the day before. Sheer nonsense.
The writer was wrong, as wrong as wrong can be.

"Maybe I could have tried to intercept her before she signed her card." "But that's way outside the norm - a fantasy really."
Good grief...that has to be the most absurd explanation ever spoken!! Bumberger, get a life!!

It's interesting how this incident keeps rearing its ugly little head. Bamberger who is lauded as a big time sports writer screwed up and won't admit it; Shipnuck is not explaining Bamberger's actions, but rather making excuses for them; and the SI editor needs to look for a new job.
