Course friendly for newer golfers May 16, 2008, 12:02 pm

by Dave
I am heading to MB in 2 weeks with my 15 year old son who just starting playing 6 months ago. he understands the game and has good golf manners. I am a middle handicapper. Not looking to play the premier courses as that would be too tough for him and unfair to fellow golfers. Any suggestions for courses that are new golfer friendly both in course set up and staff but still something he would realize is much better than the local muni's we play.

Golf Course Deals September 16, 2007, 11:14 am

by Al Moseley
My Uncle and I are visiting Myrtle Beach for three days this October 8 thru October 10, 2007. Although we both were born in South Carolina, my Uncle has never visited there. I have booked reservations for us at the Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach. What three golf courses would you recommend for two Senior players with handicaps around 12? What would the average rates be?
Thanks
Al Moseley

Upcoming Trip September 14, 2007, 3:29 am

by J.D.
My friend and I are planning a 5 day golf trip to MB (10/15/07 - 10/19/07). Last time there was around 1989. Would appreciate some comments on the weather this time of year and the must play courses. We will probably play 5 or 6 rounds.
Thanks, I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

True Blue Overrated August 18, 2007, 4:11 pm

by Frank Petrusic
I've played seven of the ten courses on your list, and found them all very good, some near spectacular. However, I was stunned to see True Blue on your list. Having played it this past June, I found it nothing like the others on your list, and a very unpleasant experience. Hidden bunkers, waste areas, average greens, funky layout - if it's "Caledonia on steroids" - they should have avoided they same stuff Barry Bonds used.

Courses for the economically Challenged June 8, 2007, 10:03 pm

by Russ
We are a group of 16 looking for 4 rounds of golf for $65 or less per round. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.
Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you veterans of the area.

by Mike
Hello. First time in MB with my 17 y old boy. (he beats me all the time...)
Whats the weather like in early march?.
Give me 5 good courses, middle range prices and a lot of fun to play inside a 30 minutes car ride from central MB.
Any other advices??
Thanks from snowy Québec!!

I'd look for a property that offers the "Members" golf package. This is a package offered by a group of golf courses all owned by the same company, thus offering a rate reduction. You can play Kings North at MB National, The River Club, Willbrook Plantation, and Litchfield, and they'll throw in a 5th (PM) round wiht cart a no charge. More info, call me toll-free between 9-5 at 888-500-6600. Good luck on your planning.

golf course ratings February 5, 2007, 5:07 pm

by Mark W.
My group of 8 golfers has been making regular trips to M.B. since 1987. We've played just about everthing. I agree with most of the author's top 10 except for Caledonia. It is way overrated. Once you get past the "golf and fish club" atmosphere gimmick, it's just a regular golf course. And it's short, not particularly challenging, and other than #18, not memorable. The sister course, True Blue is a much better golf course.
River's Edge was a neat course when we played it, but the greens were in bad shape (late May), and the mosquitos were terrible. Take plenty of repellant.
Falcon is a great value course. So is the River Club. Brunswick is a good layout, but the turf conditions have not always been that good.

my guide to golf in MB!! January 9, 2007, 2:05 am

by Matt H
Ive played all of these courses, most more than once. If you want the List....as of Summer 2006 here it is.
Barefoot Fazio
-best course down there, amazing condition, great range, and putting green
Caledonia
-the drive to the clubhouse was incredible, and the patio overlooking the 18th make for an amzing day.
Barefoot Love
-I struggled at this track, elevated green always seem to bite me in the ass, but a great course.
Tidewater
-best Par 3's on the strand. #3 and #12 are AMAZING!
Rivers Edge
-in the summer you can get a great deal $40 or $50 cant beat it, amazing back nine. dont let #9 ruin ur day! JUST LAUGH!
Dunes Club
-no description needed...its the dunes club. Love #9 and #11 and #13
TPC
-LOVE TOM FAZIO! Not as nice as his couse at Barefoot, but a vey nice track!
True Blue
-somewhat tricked up course, solid conditions, some holes i like more than others. nice track, not Caledonia however!
Glen Dornoch
-you either love it or hate it, but if you still hate it standing on the 18th green, you must be blind! Great Waterway Views!!
Kings North
-nice track, nice greens, i can live without #6...tricked up golf isnt for me....#18 is the true signature hole here.
Long Bay Club
-great track, jack at his best! fun course, bring a few extra balls, the water here just seemed to swallow my golf balls! great greens, unique golf!
Barefoot Dye
-amazing holes, tough as nails, would be higher but it hurt to score that high! Dye's courses at time are unfair. A hidden bunker seems to swallow ur ball when you think u crushed a tee shot. hidden shots, massive mounding.....ouch! great course if you are on tour!!
Barefoot Norman
-i would say the easier of the 4 courses at Barefoot. Amazing conditions, seems par for the course at barefoot! not alot of rough here, fairways roll right into waste bunkers, a few nice holes that stretch along the Waterway! not easy by any stretch, and fun!
now for the WORST of MB!
I hated...
Beechwood, i think they are finally putting this club to sleep!
Azalea Sands...same course as beechwood, and they are putting her to sleep.!! Thankfully
The Pearl, played the West course, nothing special to me.....very bored, left unimpressed.
Eastport, NO THANKS!!! ESH!
Carolina Shores....GROSS
GREAT MONEY SAVERS!!!
Brunswick
Wicked Stick
Indigo Creek
Waterway Hills-gondola ride over the waterway is kinda cool...when its working!
Possum Trot! great course to play early in ur week....work the kinks out from a long drive, or flight! great old club, solid practice facility! big fan of possum trot!
Hope this helps!! Let Me Know!!

Have you played World Tour or Tiger's Eye. Also Oyster Bay or Thistle. Your opinion. I played Barefoot Love last year we all felt it was overated. I would like to play Fazio though. Was the dunes really a nice course and was the greens large?

RE: RE: my guide to golf in MB!! January 15, 2007, 12:41 am

World Tour is overrated, nice conditions, but since i know the reasl holes i walked away very unimpressed for my money. Thistle i played once conditions were just ok that summer, but a great layout. It iw WORTH a top 10! Oyster Bay doesnt impress me much. I like the one signature hole, but there rest seemed ordinary. Conditions are spotty. Tigers Eye was a GREAT TRACK!! TIM CATE IS AMAZING. HOWEVER! I didnt enjoy the pricks int he clubhouse, and the rangers kept bugging us. I love the people at Barefoot. Rivers Edge, and the Glens Group! They kill themselves for their golfers. Dunes Club is pretty cool. #9 is fun, and the entire back is a fun ride! The fist 8 are nice but nothing too scenic, but #9 makes up for it. Any other questions? Def my opinion, i want to play brunswick and prestwick this summer, i hear nice things about both, and they are very fair priced!
