My girlfriend and I spent this past Saturday night at the King Charles Hotel on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. Being from Chicago, she had never seen Charleston, one of my home states most beautiful and unique cities. So I wanted this stay to be special. Didn't happen!
For her to experience this historical city at it's best, I wanted to stay right downtown, so I chose the Best Western King Charles Inn.
For $235 I expected a comfortable bed, but that wasn't there, but worst came later. At 4am we learned how thin the hotel room walls are. The couple in the room on one side got up to check out, so we were awakend to hear their entire conversation and their TV set. After finally getting back to sleep about 45 minutes later, we were abruptly awaken by the construction crew in the room on the other side of us. This was Sunday morning at 9am with hammers banging, saws and drills and the crew yelling at each other. The night before when we checked in, the front desk clerk had told me that I'll see plastic closing off the hallway next to my room but not to worry, because construction will not resume till Monday.
After my complaint, the hotel's GM did deduct $100 off my bill, which wasn't enough to get me to ever return to this "cheap" expensive hotel. Motel 6 and Super 8 motels have better built rooms and the same uncomfortable beds.
