This
Week at TravelGolf.com
By Douglas
Carey, TravelGolf.com Editor
Every once in awhile, our writers report on a course that's clearly
deserving of greater recognition. Such is the case this week in
GolfFlorida.com, where senior writer Derek Duncan raves about the
Diamond
Players Club Clermont layout. Duncan says all that stands between
the course and a top ranking is a better marketing effort. "DPC
Clermont is one of the most exhilarating golf courses to open in
Central Florida in years," he writes. "There is nothing else like
it in the area, probably in the state. There are shots here that
simply can't be duplicated anywhere else in Florida." Opened in
1999, the course is the brainchild of designer Terry LaGree, who
uses elevation and the natural terrain to create a course that's
full of surprising challenges.
OldDominionGolf.com: Something Special
in Maryland
For this week's OldDominionGolf.com featured review, senior writer
Jeffrey A. Rendall traveled to Maryland for a review of the Worthington
Manor Golf Club in Urbana. Located on land that's mostly wide
open and surrounding by peaceful farms, the course has been selected
for several USGA competitions. And for good reason. Rendall says
the course has only improved since becoming fully operational in
July of 1998. "The greens run very quick, and the contours offer
a real challenge to the short game," he writes. "The surfaces are
medium sized, and you'll need to be careful about placement in the
fairways to allow a good angle to attack them." Worthington Manor
was the first of three courses to open within a few miles of each
other in this northwest D.C. suburb, and Rendall says all three
are incredible layouts (the others are PB Dye Club and Whiskey Creek).
GolfCalifornia.com: History Reigns in Ojai
In his
first review for GolfCalifornia.com, staff writer Colin O'Neill
checks out the George Thomas layout at the Ojai
Valley Inn and Spa, a full-service resort and spa located 75
miles north of Los Angeles. O'Neill has high praise for Thomas,
who helped open the course back in 1923. While his original design
for Ojai has been altered a number of times over the years, many
of his unique design touches remain. "One welcome consequence to
his relatively unintrusive design approach is the preservation of
hundreds of spectacular, ancient oaks," O'Neill writes. "Every hole
has towering specimens worthy of the finest arboretum, which are
set against the constant and dramatic backdrop of the Topa Topa
mountains. It is visually stunning at every turn."
MyrtleBeachGolf.com:
Getting Better All the Time
In Myrtle Beach, bigger is better. For proof, check out senior writer
Shane Sharp's review on the Grande
Dunes County Club, which overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway
to the west, and U.S. Highway 17 to the east. Simply put, the project
is huge. "Clever front nine and scenic back nine aside, every Myrtle
Beach course built over the past 20-years is merely bait for the
real estate market, and no track more so than the Grande Dunes Country
Club," Sharp writes. "The Grande Dunes development is one of the
most ambitious undertakings in the southeastern United States."
All told, it's a $20 billion project with a 20-year build out set
on 2200 acres of "prime" intracoastal land.
GolfIllinois.com: An Unforgettable Story
Senior Writer Kiel Christianson traveled to Illinois this week to
learn more about the story behind the Annbriar
Golf Course, which opened in 1992 in Waterloo. While there's
not space to recap the story here, you won't want to miss Christianson's
rendition. In addition to the bittersweet story, Annbriar also features
one of the top courses in the state. "This may be one of the most
attractively landscaped courses anywhere," Christianson writes.
"The combination of wild native grasses (and even weeds!) highlighted
by dazzling flowerbeds and artful rockwork perfectly frame the firm,
lush playing surfaces." No wonder the owner puts his course up against
any he's played around the country, including world-famous tracks
like Torrey Pines in San Diego.
GolfArizona.com: A Perfect Mix in Phoenix
Neatly tucked close to South Mountain Park, the blend of traditional
links play and desert target golf found at Phantom
Horse Golf Club makes for a challenging and sometimes exciting
round. So says staff writer Ray Bangs, who brings us this week's
featured GolfArizona.com review from Phoenix. If you're looking
for an opportunity to test your game against a traditional links
layout mixed with desert target golf, this is the place. "Built
in 1989, Phantom Horse has quickly developed into an outstanding
Arizona course," writes Bangs, who recommends visitors stay at the
Pointe South Mountain Resort, a world-class destination resort that
spent $8 million redesigning its 640 guest suites.
From the Rough
In case you missed last week's report, be sure to catch senior writer
Shane Sharp's review of the Barefoot
Resort in North Myrtle Beach. The brainchild of developer Sammy
Puglia, Barefoot Resort is well on its way to becoming one of the
east coast's premier golfing destinations. As Sharp notes, "Puglia
wanted to forever change the face of Myrtle Beach golf from that
of a middle-of-the-road, working man's golf destination to a mecca
of high end, resort style golf fit for the most discriminating golf
traveler." Looks like he's off to a great start, especially since
Tom Fazio, Pete Dye, Davis Love III and Greg Norman are the names
you'll find on the resort's four stellar courses.
As always, if you disagree with our reviewers on a certain course
or just want to sound off about the latest from the PGA Tour, be
sure to visit the GolfBoards.com
website, a series of message boards where visitors can write about
everything from the Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's
also a free classifieds section where golfers can advertise that
old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for years. And if
you haven't checked it out already, be sure to visit the new TravelGolf.com
Pro Shop, a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all
of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no need to go anywhere else on
the Web.
Until next week….happy golfing!
