TravelGolf.com: The Bear Roars
into Colorado with The Summit at
Cordillera, another Nicklaus Masterpiece
By Douglas
Carey, TravelGolf.com Editor
It's not everyday one of our writers has his picture taken with one of the legends of the game,
but there was senior writer David R. Holland earlier this month, posing with none other than Jack Nicklaus.
Holland was in Colorado for the opening ceremony festivities of Nicklaus' newest Colorado design
at Cordillera's fourth and final golf jewel,
The Summit at Cordillera,
located in the Vail Valley. Of the more than 17,000 golf courses in the
U.S., only three are at a higher elevation than The Summit, which features a 360-degree panorama of the Rocky Mountains.
Also at RockiesGolf.com this week, be
sure to catch Holland's review of the
SolVista Golf & Ski Ranch, which opened in June in the uncrowded Grand County and
features a definite valley-floor feel with native wetlands, grasses
and water coming in to play.

GolfCalifornia.com: Mother Nature Plays Mount Shasta
To reach the
Mount Shasta Resort, staff writer Doug Saunders traveled
far up Interstate 5 into the foothills of the Cascade
Mountain Range and into the secluded and mysterious land of Northern
California. "Located just 60 miles from the Oregon border,
Mount Shasta stands as a foreboding testament to Mother Nature’s most awesome power," said
Saunders, who also came away impressed with the layout at Mount Shasta Resort.
At just 6,035 yards from the back tees, accuracy is king here...Also this week in
California, staff writer Guy Torrey visits the relaxing
36 holes at Ridgemark Golf and Country
Club in Hollister, located just south of San Jose.
HawaiiGolfGuide.com: Turning Up the Charm
Staff writer George Fuller prides himself on discovering hidden gems in Hawaii, and he's
done it again this week with the
Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu.
Fuller says nearly $30 million is being spent to make Turtle Bay Resort as presentable as
it once was back in the 1970s. The original golf course, a George Fazio design, was opened
in 1971. When the Arnold Palmer Course was built in 1992, a couple of holes
from the Fazio Course were used, and the Fazio Course was reduced to a nine-hole,
family-style layout. Now, the original George Fazio Course is being restored
(with two new holes) to complement the stellar Palmer Course. According to Fuller,
the restored course will be open for play in early 2002.
GolfFlorida.com: Bring a few Extra Balls
Senior writer Joe Bruno traveled to Bradenton this week to play the challenging
Waterlefe Golf & River Club, and he left with a lighter golf bag. Like many golfers,
he left a few golf balls on the course during his round.
"What makes a round of golf at Waterlefe so difficult, is that you have to clear
either marshes on your tee shot at least nine times during your round of golf," Bruno writes.
"And if your ball goes into the marsh, forget about getting it back."
Opened in 1999, Waterlefe features five tee boxes, fantastic views and a superlative
staff. If you can handle the challenge, Bruno says Waterlefe is well worth the trip.

From the Rough: OldDominionGolf.com Spotlight
There's been plenty of buzz in Virginia lately about Arnold Palmer's newest creation, the
Bay Creek Golf Club, so we asked
senior writer Jeffrey A. Rendall to see if the course lives up to the hype. Rendall was in Cape Charles for the
ceremonial opening,
and he says the layout exceeds expectations. And while you're enjoying Bay Creek, Rendall recommends staying
at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel, the newest and nicest hotel in the area. His feature on the hotel is included in the Bay Creek review.
