Heading off to a college town for the big game? Don't forget your golf clubs!
Working on the latest story for TravelGolf.com's weekly college football series, I was wondering how many people actually plan golf around attending a game. For me, it's a no-brainer, akin to deciding what I'll throw on the grill for the tailgate party.
Then again, unless it's a one-day trip for a wedding or a funeral, my golf clubs are always packed.
One of the great highlights of covering Florida State as a beat writer was when the Seminoles joined the Atlantic Coast Conference back in the early '90s. Forget what that meant in regard to stories - we could now count on whacking it around all those great tracks throughout ACC country! The Duke University golf course ... most of the Pinehurst golf courses ... I even got on Congressional once!
For day games, we sports writers coordinated our flights to play golf on Friday afternoons. For night games, we often teed it up Friday and Saturday morning. Most weeks, what with FSU crushing every ACC team back then, we worked harder setting up tee times than we did covering the games!
Golf is a great way to get the lay of the land and enjoy the change in seasons. And you'd be surprised at how accommodating some top-notch golf clubs can be to fans from the visiting team!
As always, TravelGolf.com welcomes your comments.

Being a night kickoff, Saturday's game in Tallahassee, Fla. between Florida State and Boston College gives golfers plenty of time to tee it up and then properly prepare for a game that will play a big role in who wins the ACC's Atlantic Division - all in an area of the country that's enjoying some of its best weather. November in Tallahassee offers a strong mix of courses, striking elevation changes and gorgeous fall colors.

If you're hitting the tables in Biloxi or just sunning yourself on the Gulf, save time to play The Preserve Golf Club. Located in a gorgeous nature preserve, the scenery here is allowed to dictate the drama, Chris Baldwin writes. Designer Jerry Pate didn't obsessively try to put his imprint on the land as much as he allowed the surroundings to star.
