South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

Much Improved!!!

Wow, what a difference a year makes. I heard they hired a new superintendent. He must be great considering this place was a mess last year. Not now -- tees/fairways good, and GREENS in very good shape (firm, smooth, and pretty fast). Keeping them firmer certainly helps cut down on the ball marks (c'mon golfers, fix those ball marks!) ruining the roll -- something that had been a problem in prior years. This is northern VA, so it is pricey to play without some discount. No water on the course? Even the little 9-hole courses at least provide water . . .

1st Timers Need a Map

This course could be 4 stars. The little things keep it at 3 stars.

This course needs better signage for everything. We only found a few signs pointing to a few holes, "2/8". Everywhere else, you're left guessing which way to go. The course has some flow to it but there are many long cart path drives between holes because of under roadway crossings. THEN, when you find the tee, there is a small wood post with mailbox numbers. The 12 hole was missing the 2? Somebody needs to care just a little fix these types of things.

For the cost of admission and for sake of first timers, please please please, add hole information signs at the tee boxes and signage along the cart paths to point golfers in the right direction.

I don't know much about how golf courses are maintained but when we played Monday morning, almost every hole had a lawn mower or a leaf blower or multiple lawn mowers. Maybe it was just bad luck. One of the fairway mowers came within about 10 feet of my playing partner as she was at her ball.

The mowing team needed to be out earlier than Monday morning because the rough was 4"-5" thick on some holes (first few holes at least). Almost impossible to find your ball or hit reasonable shots when in the rough.

On a final note, course is difficult but fair. The greens are fantastic (a little inconsistent in speed throughout the round). I would return to this course and probably wouldn't be as lost on the 2nd time.

Great resurgence for South Riding!

I've been playing this course for many, many years and the conditions have ebbed and flowed during that time. The last couple of years saw the conditions decline, which was surprising given the premium price to play.

Yesterday was my first time back in 2023 and it was a great surprise to find the course in excellent shape! From tee to green, it was in as good condition as I've seen it!

The 3 1/2 star rating should be going up soon!

The course was fairly wet after the rain we had this week, necessitating cart path only rules. Pretty fair really. The only problem is that there were no water jugs on the course. I like walking and especially on cart path only days but it got up to 80-82 and I was out of water right after the turn. I understand no beverage cart on a Wednesday in September but there should be water coolers.

When it dries out, the course is in really nice condition.

No Water?

For $90 (would have been $105 if not for a hot deal), I'd expect there to be water stations on the course. It was 96 degrees outside (99 heat index) and there was no water on course, no cart girl, and no heads up given that no water was available. What on earth is going on here?

good track but not worth the price

I give the course 4.5 stars on the layout...it's a nice track, with fun holes that can give some risk/reward, have you play different shots, but still getable if you want to score.

However, for the price of $90, it is nowhere near worth it. Crab grass on the tees (particularly on the front), horrible green maintenance with dry/dead patches, patchy/clumpy rough on most all of the holes (yes, we are supposed to avoid the rough!)...there are other courses within 10mi of this that are cheaper and in better shape...

It's a shame, too, because I remember when the course was in great shape (and cheaper)...I used to play here at least 1/week...but not since the course went south & the price went north...

Hot and humid day; course not to busy for a Friday early afternoon; starter lets us tee off early; course was in decent shape, but had recently aerated greens, will play again.

Better than Expected

This course isn’t the first that comes to mind when thinking about where to play in Northern Virginia, but you should give it a shot. The course was in great shape and there are more than enough challenges for all levels of golfers. Tee times have been fairly easy to get as well, which hasn’t been the case lately for some of the more popular (and expensive). courses. Definitely would recommend playing here.

after years of neglect.

Management has hired a new greenskeeper who is starting to turn the course around after years of neglect and poor maintenance. Areas around the club house have seen mulch around the trees and shrubs. The practice chipping green actually has grass not weeds for the first time in years. Dead tree branches and limbs around the course, tee boxes and greens have been removed, fairways and greens are in nice condition and areas with ruts and damage have bern repaired. Areas that are normally wet and typically are damaged by golf carts have bern roped off. Greens are in great condition. The team
Is going to need time to get the course back to what it used to be but they have made a great start.
