South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

Wait
Waited no less than 15 minutes at each tee box took 4.5 hours to finish as a single because of how slow the pace was
The course, as usual, was in great condition. Fairways and greens did not have any leaves despite the fall season. Cart paths do need repair. My GPS was not working and I found it very frustrating because the course did have any 100 and 150 yards markers, neither were there any sprinkler heads with distances! The tees also did not have any distances marked which is very critical on Par 3 holes because the tee locations keep changing for maintenance.
Beautiful Course
I hadn’t played South Riding in a couple of years due to travel distance. I was surprised at how well maintained it is. Beautiful greens, fairways, tees and bunkers. I’d also forgot what a great layout it is. As a single, I was paired with three other singles. We all had our own carts; much appreciated in these Covid-19 times. Overall great experience. I might have to suck up the northern VA traffic issues and add South Riding to my ‘best courses to play’ list. Kudos to the maintenance staff.
Slow play.
It would be beneficial if players were encouraged to go to their own balls and be ready to play, not take multiple selfies, limit the time spent searching for errant shots, bring multiple clubs to their ball to minimize walks back to their cart and to play ready golf.
Taking selfie’s while on the green when the group behind is ready to play was especially rude.
A Very Nice Course and A Good Value
I played their sister course (Pleasant Valley) a couple of years ago and was similarly impressed. South Riding is not a difficult walk, although I saw only a few other folks walking on a splendid, sunny, warm early-November Tuesday. The course is moderately difficult, but fair. The conditions across the board were very good. All of us in my group agreed that the day's pin placement was quite devilish! Despite the fact that I played poorly, I couldn't be more pleased with the course and the reasonable price.
A good challenge. OK conditions.
I've always liked the layout at South Riding,, pretty long, well-bunkered, mainly open fairways, well-guarded greens.
Going in, realize and accept that you're playing subdivision golf, as many holes are lined by houses or townhouses. However, they rarely are a distraction. Also, accept that this is not a course for walkers, as you wind around the subdivision a couple of times.
Conditions were not stellar...greens in good shape, bunkers just re-sanded (they were great!), shaggy, soft fairways recovering from summer, a mixed bag on fringes, tees and rough. Very soft overall, so limited carry.
Holes 12 and 13 present the biggest challenges, with some obscure challenges involving a meandering creek. No. 9 is tough, too. Some nice variety in the design, although the overall layout is pretty flat. Blue tees are plenty long, golds are really long.
South Riding
I feel like there could be a few more yardage markers on course . The scorecard helped but lines on cart path are faded and 150 pole was not on every hole
