Brackenridge Park Golf Course, which is the oldest public golf course in Texas, was the first ever host to the Texas Open Golf Tournament in 1922. This historic golf course has the honor of being the first inductee into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Brackenridge Park may not be as challenging to today’s golfers, but it is still an entertaining round. The layout has a tight front nine with plenty of trees, demanding accurate tee shots. The back nine is more open, subjecting it to strong winds. Water comes into play on a few holes and there are also numerous doglegs and well-placed bunkers to watch out for. Elevated greens and tight fairways lined with trees add to the challenge at Brackenridge Park Golf Course.

Tillinghast Original

Old Brack is a fantastic piece of old golf charm. It’s a masterpiece of bunkering done by Tillinghast. Narrow in portions with the trees and bunkering but more than ample enough room is out there. All greens are raised with bunkers guarding all sides and fall offs. Long is dead and many times wrong angles are impossible to get close. The course is a muni, but it is the premier muni along the Alamo golf trail. No overseeding of fairways except 30/40 yards short and in. All Bermuda grass this time of the year was dormant. The course is definitely meant to be walked like a stroll in the park, but carts are welcome. No driving range or chipping area, but the practice green is very large and mimics greens on course. Greens are undulated with slopes more than average, but not as severe as other courses I’ve played. They rolled very true. 16 is the only odd hole on the course. I believe they ran out of real estate and the large tree is immediately in play for anyone trying to hit anything other than a 150 yard layup short of the creek. The front nine is truly memorable, and the collection of par 3s is some of the best I’ve seen throughout. Overall a definite play for anyone who enjoys old architectural gems.

Old charm

Brackenridge Park had the charm of an early 1900s photo that has held the test of time. This is a beautiful golf course, that I would recommend to anyone in the area. Pace of play the day I played was unfortunately awful, I teed off at 1:30 and finished the first 9 around 4:30. But, I saw enough of the course to know it is definitely worth the play. Greens for December were excellent. Actually, the greens for any time of the year were excellent. Bunkers were all raked and looked fantastic. The course was dry despite the rain a few days prior. The golf cart laser rangefinder is a nice addition. It was decently at times. I would enjoy a GPS more to show distances to bunkers, etc. but it does help. No driving range on site, but the First Tee driving range is near. Just drive over there before coming to the course. The practice green was large and matched the speed of the greens on course perfectly. The course is not overly long, demands accuracy off the tee. The bunkers are extremely penal if you find yourself in them, but landing areas are fairly generous. Walking would be easily accomplished here due to the mostly flat terrain. I'd highly recommend this course to anyone who wants the old world charm of a stroll in the park knocking a ball around.

History and Charm

From the moment you pull into the parking lot, you can feel the history and charm of Brackenridge.

My fiancé and I were continually impressed by the course conditions given that this is a muni course. Although a short course, Brack is definitely challenging. The fairways are narrow and the bunkers are strategically located. It was also nice that the golf cart had a laser rangefinder!

The biggest con for us was the pace of play. We started exactly on time and as the group in front of us was finishing the first hole, but there were two groups stacked up by the time we got to hole 3. Not wanting to play a 5.5+ hour round, we skipped 7-9 and headed to 10 where it was wide open.

Besides for the pace of play and the lack of a driving range, I would highly reccomen Brack. But, we also got a 50% off GolfNow deal. $75 per person is steep.

Not a bad muni...but definitely over priced

This is definitely one of the better municipal courses I have played. Was in town visiting my buddy and he raved about the course. The staff was fairly friendly, the course was in solid shape for a muni and the greens were extremely impressive to get that much play. The layout is pretty basic though there are some interesting holes with water. Overall though, the price was waaaay too high. For a municipal course, you shouldn't be paying more than $50 in March. I paid over $60. I paid the same amount to play TPC San Antonio. Again, good course but definitely overpriced.

In Defense of Old Brack...

So, I've written a review before Old Brack and play the course quite often as a member of the Alamo City Golf Trail. Recently, I've played with a number of outta-towners at other area courses who haves said the ratings for Old Brack weren't good so they hadn't considered playing it.

Here are my thoughts - which are the thoughts of a low handicapper who has had the privilege to attend 8 US Opens, The Masters & play many of the US Top 100 courses...

Here is what Brack is not... It is not a Resort Course - it is a municipal golf course in San Antonio. It doesn't have lil cart boys who come over and rub your clubs down for you. It doesn't have pretty lil 18 year olds to pop your beer cans. It doesn't have GPS carts (it does have lasers on the carts) because this course is meant to be walked. Some think it doesn't have a driving range - it doesn't technically but the First Tee Driving Range is a sand wedge from the 8th tee box on Mulberry.

Here is what Brack is... Brackenridge Park Golf Course is part of the Alamo City Golf Trail (ACGT) and is its signature course. Why do I love Old Brack? History & character - something 99% of golf courses these days lack. Brack is the oldest public course in Texas and opened in 1916. The course design is by A.W. Tillinghast. Why is this cool? Tillinghast is probably one of the most prolific golf course architects in the history of golf. The guy designed 265 different courses and a few that you may have heard of... Baltusrol, Bethpage State Park, Winged Foot, Newport C.C., Ridgewood C.C. and the Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort. Brack is also the home to the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and was the original site of the Texas Open (now held at TPC San Antonio). Finally, Brack has become home to many of the top local amateur tournaments and will be holding the city's first Public Links Championship this fall.

Brack is great course for every type of golfer. All 18 holes are contained with OB around the external perimeter on the course. This allows for players to get a little forgiveness on some misses. It isn't uncommon to find a player playing the 9th hole playing from the first fairway or vice versa. I like playing the 14th hole down the 13th fairway (so watch out!). The course is ALWAYS in great shape and the greens ALWAYS roll true. The front 9 features some tighter fairways and smaller greens than the very scorable back 9 with the two short par 5s 12 & 13. It's pretty neat to play Tillinghast's classic square cut greens on holes 2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 14, 15 and 18. Also, when the rounds done take a peak in the locker room where you see old lockers featuring the names of Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, and Sam Snead.

If you are a true fan and lover of the game of golf you will appreciate Brack. If you are looking for someone to hold your hand and tell you how great your white belt looks with your white shoes go to Austin.

Overrated Muni

Being rated so high for one of the best courses, I was severely disappointed in the overall condition of the course and amount that was charged. This course while it has history is old and dated as far as course management. The layout was great overall and greens were in top shape. No driving range was a big let down for the price. The pace of play was excellent. However, let's just call it what it is, a low end municipal golf course with a great history.

Muni Golf

Brackenridge gets a ton of run every time "where to golf in SA" gets brought up in a conversation. The golf history that is tied to here is legendary and possibly what draws the attention of most golf fans. It's what brought me here to play. It is a muni, so if service, frills, a range, food, & pristine conditions are what you're about, considered yourself warned.

The starter got us going right on time this morning and the pace of play for the entire round was spot on and we were done in 4 hours. Course design and layout was excellent, as to be expected. Getting into the right position off the tee was key on a number of holes or finding the large trees or long bunkers would force you to tap into your creative hero shot repertoire.

Course conditions were average. Greens were the highlight and a rating saver. They rolled extremely well, with solid speed and the pin placements this day were crafty and did not follow the pin sheet - something that was not mentioned by the starter. Carts have no GPS, but have a laser range finder attached. Tee boxes & fairways were decently mown and the rough somewhat thick, but most lies were flat and fair. Bunkers had sand, but had not been groomed. Overall the conditions did not match the green fee.

Bottomline, I can say I've played it and I played it well this day. It pairs well with my game and is worth consideration, however labeling it a must play when in SA might be a stretch. I usually photo-doc my trips to a new course, however here there just wasn't much to capture that easily highlights the attributes.

Like stepping back in time

Even though the temperature was 100 degrees when I played, I have no regrets braving the heat and experiencing a piece of Texas history. I played the front nine and am looking forward to playing the back in the near future. The course is narrow, but fair. The turf was immaculate from tee to green. I love the square greens! Play this course!

Nice Track, Couple of Suggestions

1) Update score cards to offer more accurate yardage, tee-to-green.

2) Tee box markers could provide a lot more info regarding layout of each hole.
It is often difficult to know what is the direction of play for any particular hole.

3). Place more yardage markers in field/fairways (sprinkler heads, barber poles,

ONCE IN A LIFE TIME

HISTORIC 100 YEARS OLD, WE ARRIVED JUST AFTER A RAIN STORM THAT HAD BEEN RAGING SINCE SUNUP. THERE WAS A LITTLE RAIN ON THE WINDOW WHEN I HEADED TO THE CLUB HOUSE. AT ONE HOUR EARLY WE WERE THE FIRST OFF THE TEES AT 1:15PM, THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE ON THE FRONT NINE THAT BACK STILL CLOSED. FINISHED THE FRONT AND THERE WERE STILL ONLY THREE FLIGHTS ON THE COURSE. WE WERE THE FIRST OFF THE BACKSIDE AND SEEN NO OTHER FLIGHTS UNTIL THE 15 TH TEE. THE BEST GAME EVER IT WAS MY 67TH BIRTHDAY. EVERY YEAR FOR MY BIRTHDAY I GIVE A GIFT TO SOMEONE ELSE. THIS YEAR I GAVE A FRIEND 18 WITH ME AT BRACKENRIDGE. IT WAS THE BEST EVER. THE SUN CAME OUT ON THE 1ST FAIRWAY AND WAS OUT THE WHOLE ROUND, THE RAIN LEFT A SMALL AMOUNT OF MOISTURE ON THE FAIRWAYS, THE GREENS WERE DRY AND A PEASURE TO PUTT ON. TO BE THE FIRST TWO GOLFERS ON AND WHAT SEEMED TO BE THE ONLY TWO ON THE COURSE ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY HARD TO BEAT 5 STARS ACCROSS THE BOARD SIMPLY ONE IN A LIFE TIME WOW WOW WOW

service

this is our second time playing here in a week. first time the service was bad. we thought the staff might be having a bad day. but the same happened again. no southern hospitality at this course. we called previous to our round to find out the cart rules, but were left on hold for minutes on each of our 3 calls. when we arrived at the course check in counter, no smile, no hello, no how are you, just, here your slip. outside, no starter, people just lined up at the first tee. terrible way to deal with people. it is too bad as the course is nice, but the people do not seem to be happy to work here. we have played other municipal courses, such as northern hills, and they are great with their service.

alright

the course is in good condition. good tee blocks, fairways and greens. the staff do not make you feel welcome. even after we told the pro shop that it was our first time here, he did not give us any details about anything, like no washrooms inside. or gps on the cart in a little box, which was only brought to our attention by other golfers on the 16th hole. it was still a good value for the money. but southern hospitality it was not.
