TravelGolf.com:
Sharpening our Focus on Real Estate

By Douglas Carey, TravelGolf.com Editor

September started with a blast at TravelGolf.com, where we opened up our new Charlotte bureau and promoted senior writer Shane Sharp in the process. Sharp tees off our coverage this week with a spotlight on real estate in both Myrtle Beach and Las Vegas. Over the past year and a half, the Myrtle Beach real estate market has given rise to two of the largest residential golf communities to hit the South Carolina coast: Barefoot Resort and Golf and the Grande Dunes Golf and Country Club. Sharp examines both communities before moving onto Las Vegas, which has clearly become one of the bonefied golf capitals of the wild, Wild West.

GolfCalifornia.com: A Quik Peek at Milpitas

Staff writer Guy Torrey debuts his "Quik Peek" series this week with a look at Summitpointe Golf Club in Milpitas, located just outside of San Jose. Designed to give essential information about lesser known, affordable golf courses in major population centers, the series will run at many sites throughout the TravelGolf.com network. Also in GolfCalifornia.com this week, look for Tom LaMarre's review of the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course, once the best-kept secret on the Monterey Peninsula. Now it's simply known as one of the best municipal courses in the state.

Senior writer Joe Bruno says you might need an Indian guide with his trusty compass to find the Long Marsh Golf Club. But if you yearn for a pleasant day hacking away on the sunny Florida links, the trip is well worth it, Located in the obscure Port Charlotte town of Rotonda, Long Marsh is a long course, with the championship golds running a mammoth 7120 yards. If you can handle the distance, Bruno says you'll find this to be one of the must-play golf courses on the west coast of Florida.

Rick Smith Leaves his Mark at Treetops

arizona golf arizona golf arizona golf Of all the luxurious, memorable golf resorts in Michigan, Kiel Christianson says none can boast the collection of courses and the general cache of Treetops Resort in Gaylord. Among the longest feathers in Treetops’ cap is the fact that it is home to one of America’s best golf instructors, Rick Smith. Treetops is also the location of his first 18-hole design, the Rick Smith Signature Course. "Conditions, practice facilities, clubhouse, resort amenities, service, etc., etc., etc. - all are as first-rate as you would expect from Treetops," Christianson said. The same can be said for the Rick Smith Tradition Course, a layout that Christianson says has a generous spirit, an impish nature and a historical feel, even though it is the newest of the four 18-hole layouts at Treetops.

GolfTexas.com: A True El Paso Surprise

Since it opened in 1991, Painted Dunes Golf Club has been one of the most acclaimed municipal layouts in the state. We sent senior writer David R. Holland to the El Paso layout to see if it was still deserving of its high ranking. Sure enough, it's well worth the trip. A true desert course designed with great imagination, painted Dunes features beautiful mountain views and undulating bentgrass greens. Also in GolfTexas.com this week, be sure to catch senior writer Kyle Dalton's review of the Hancock Municipal Golf Course, a piece of Texas and golfing history in Austin. Dalton also offers a review of the Meadowlakes Country Club in Marble Falls, which has recently become a private facility.

Quick Shots from Arizona and More

In GolfArizona.com, Shane Sharp heads to Peoria for a look at the Quintero Country Club (right), a rising star in Phoenix’s West Valley...At ScotlandGolf.com, Andrew Jessop offers a look at the The Old Course at Scotland's Moray Golf Club, which features some of the best views in the world... in GolfCalifornia.com, Tim Booth checks in from Davis with a review of the Wildhorse Golf Course, which is looking to attract new golfers to its picturesque layout.

From the Rough: RockiesGolf.com Spotlight

In case you missed last week's report, be sure to catch senior writer David R. Holland's visit to the best new golf course to open this century in Colorado, The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa, located in spacious Grand Junction. Holland says this Jim Engh design is "a pilgrimage through sandstone aboard a sliver of verdant carpet," and that's just the start. The course features a calming panorama at 4,600 feet in elevation, looking south to the pinks, reds and browns of the 800-foot cliffs of The Colorado National Monument, north to the gray-purple Bookcliffs and east to Mount Garfield and the Grand Mesa, the world's highest flat-topped mountain.

Coming this Month: September Features

Later this month, be sure to look for a feature story on the newest courses in Phoenix, as well as our regular Architect Spotlight. This month we'll visit with Dan Maples, who talks about the Carolinas' hottest golf destinations and his impact on the region. In our Business Corner, look for a story on the Links Golf Group, a course management company that's reorganized and eager to make a new start. All that and much more in September at TravelGolf.com.

BadGolfMonthly.com: Hall of Shame

The Hall of Shame honors bad golfers worldwide by presenting the worst scores attained by hackers from all over the globe. View the entries to see if there is actually a bigger hacker than you out there, or post your own worst score! Tell everyone a little about your game too-- no excuses, just provide a little context.

As always, if you disagree with our reviewers on a certain course or just want to sound off about the latest from the PGA Tour, be sure to visit the GolfBoards.com website, a series of message boards where visitors can write about everything from the Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's also a free classifieds section where golfers can advertise that old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for years. And if you haven't checked it out already, be sure to visit the new TravelGolf.com Pro Shop, a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no need to go anywhere else on the Web.

Until next week….happy golfing!
