This Week at TravelGolf.com (March 12-18)
By Douglas Carey, Contributor

Stoneybrook West
Home to Disney World and countless boy bands, Orlando is also one of the top golf destinations in the country. It's also home to our newest site, OrlandoGolf.com, which tees off this week with several key course reviews. We begin with a look at the two courses at the Stoneybrook Golf Club. Bracketing one of the strongest golf markets in the state, the two Stoneybrook courses offer very different styles of golf. In his review of the Stoneybrook West Golf Club in Winter Garden, staff writer Derek Duncan says the Arthur Hills-design is a desert-style course on the type of open, agricultural site common to the Midwest.
While Stoneybrook West opened just last November, the Stoneybrook East course opened three years ago.
Both courses offer a true challenge for Orlando-area golfers. "Stoneybrook East isn't a tricked up course, which lends it a distinctive character and an air of maturity," Duncan writes. "In fact, in spite of the housing and occasional railroad-tie walls, there exists a rather lush, naturalness to the club. Duncan notes that both Stoneybrook courses are owned and managed by US Homes, a company that is increasingly venturing into golf course development and making a strong move in Florida. Judging by these reviews, the company is one to watch.
TravelGolf.com: Thomas AT 505 Irons

Thomas AT 505
In this week's main product review, general manager Robert Lewis takes an extended look at the Thomas AT 505 Irons, designed by golf manufacturer Thomas Golf of Carlsbad, Calif. Part of the Advanced Aim & Alignment AT 505 irons series, the Thomas irons bear close resemblance to the Calloway X-14 series in both feel and appearance. While traditional golf clubs deceive and confuse us and make it difficult to achieve proper alignment, Thomas is treating irons and woods with the same philosophy as a putter. Consider Lewis impressed: "Lacking the hype of a big name spokesperson or flashy endorsements, Thomas Golf is an example of a small manufacturer delivering a superior quality product with sound technology."
OldDominionGolf.com: Adventures in Williamsburg
Many new courses across the country are being built around new real estate development, which is not necessarily a bad thing. That said, there's something to be said for playing a round in the country. In this week's OldDominionGolf.com spotlight review, senior writer Jeffrey A. Rendall visits the Kiskiack Golf Club, located approximately 15 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg and 35 minutes from Richmond, Virginia. As Rendall points out, "You get the 'country' feeling right away, even exiting the interstate." In addition to the beautiful parkland setting, it's an incredibly playable golf course. A John LaFoy design that plays to 6,775 yards from the championship tees, Kiskiack is surrounded by farm fields. There isn't a new home in sight, and that's a good thing for most people.
OrlandoGolf.com: The Memory Remains at Mission Inn

Mission Inn
Back at OrlandoGolf.com, staff writer Elaine Gallant paid a visit to the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort, home to two 18-hole, championship golf courses and much more. The resort, nestled in an expansive, hilly countryside of pine, oak and cypress tree hammocks, actually captures the seclusion of a 625-acre, private estate. As Gallant writes, "Because of its surroundings and attention to detail, Mission Inn has received numerous awards including the Mobil Four-Star Resort award 17 years in a row." The resort has countless amenities, and the golf features the venerable El Campeon (built in 1926 by Charles E. Clarke of Troon, Scotland) and the more forgiving Las Colinas, added in 1992 by former PGA Tour player Gary Koch. Come prepared for a complete golf experience.
MyrtlebeachGolf.com: New Look for The River Club

River Club
After a major renovation project, The River Club is attracting a record number of golfers. In this week's MyrtlebeachGolf.com news feature, Shane Sharp takes an inside look at the new A-1 bentgrass greens, more playable bunkers, and the classic Tom Jackson-designed layout. The course features water on 15 of its 18 holes, 100 bunkers, and some incredible views of the surrounding low country. After struggling through one of the coldest Decembers on record, the River Club bounced back for a near record setting February. Look for a full review from Sharp in the near future.
From the Rough

The Raven at Sabino Springs
March Madness is upon us, which can only mean countless office pools and leisurely days of spring training baseball. For the ultimate spring escape, we turn toward the underappreciated city of Tucson. In senior writer Shane Sharp's Tucson overview, he says what Tucson lacks in quantity, the "Old Pueblo" can more than make up for in quality. His three-day golf gorge to Tucson will have you teeing it up on the area's best golf courses, eating at out of the way Mexican joints and steakhouses, and bedding down in the best, most affordable digs in town.
Staying in Tucson, senior writer David R. Holland offers a review of The Raven at Sabino Springs, where the golf is simply mind-boggling. As Holland writes, "There's 6,776 yards of keep your mind on the game or you will be penalized golf. It's a par 71, with an elevation change that begins at 2,500 feet and climbs another 500 into the base of the Santa Catalins Mountains."
As always, if you disagree with our reviewers on a certain course or just want to sound off
about Tiger's recent "slump", be sure to visit the
TravelGolf.com forum,
a series of message boards where visitors can write about everything from the
Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's also a free classifieds section
where golfers can advertise that old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for
years. And if you haven't checked it out already, be sure
to visit the new TravelGolf.com Pro Shop,
a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no
need to go anywhere else on the Web.
Until next week….happy golfing!
