This Week at TravelGolf.com (June 11-17)

By Douglas Carey,
Contributor

Here in California, the temperatures are heading past the century mark and the energy bills are setting new records. Sounds like a perfect time to head to Greenland, where we find staff writer Art Stricklin this week. In one of our more unique assignments, Stricklin traveled to Greenland to participate in the Drambuie World Ice Golf Championship, held in the tiny village of Uummannaq. "Players are regularly warned to watch each other for frostbite and to be careful of stepping in seal holes," Stricklin says. "But the scenery is truly spectacular, the golf is most unique and the journey to the golf course is one not likely to be repeated anywhere in the world."

On The Road In New Mexico

Twin Warriors
Twin Warriors
If you're like many Americans, your summer vacation includes a road trip along a portion of the famed Route 66, which is about to celebrate its 75th year. If your travels take you through New Mexico, be sure to catch senior writer David R. Holland's feature this week on the "Land of Enchantment." His comprehensive look at the state includes a listing of New Mexico's best courses, starting with the Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Course in Sandia Park. After reading Holland's description of the state, you may want to revise your summer travel plans. "Those who love the spirit of 'The Land of Enchantment' experience a peacefulness here," Holland writes, "a mixture of cultures from ancient Native Americans to a blend of Hispanic and European traditions." Holland also recommends a place to stay during your visit, the Hyatt Regency Tamaya in Santa Ana Pueblo, the largest resort ever developed on Native American land.

OldDominionGolf.com: Stonehouse Stands Alone

Looking for a truly distinctive layout in Virginia? Senior writer Jeffrey A. Rendall has just the course for you. Located 30 miles east of Richmond, Legends of Stonehouse is a Mike Strantz design that you won't soon forget. Stonehouse is patterned after a mountain course, despite being hundreds of miles from a mountain range. And that's not the only intriguing point about this challenging layout. Come prepared for wide fairways, huge greens and plenty of elevation changes, be it downhill tee balls or second shots to elevated greens over ravines. Most importantly, be sure to enjoy the scenery. "There are several holes here where you won't believe how they ever put a green there, but they've done it," Rendall says. "It's stunning the whole way through."

A few weeks ago, a friend told me he was going to be custom-fitted for a set of clubs. I thought surely the cost would be exorbitant. In fact, it was quite reasonable. To learn more about the process, check out senior writer Kiel Christianson's feature story on custom-fit clubs, which focuses on the work of Colorado-based company Dimension Z Golf. The company rep suggests that custom-fitting will knock four strokes off your game, and it's hard not to believe him. "More and more golfers are realizing that custom-fitting doesn't cost much (or anything at all), and custom-fit clubs don't cost any more than their off-the-rack counterparts," said Christianson, who notes that the nearest club-fitter may only be as far away as your local pro-shop or golf store.

Greensboro Looks for Bigger Names

In this week's spotlight feature story, senior writer Shane Sharp looks back at last month's Greater Greensboro Chrysler Open, which Scott Hoch won against a fairly no-name field. "Hoch was one of the bigger names to participate in the GGCC this year," Sharp writes. "But if the ever-fickle Hoch is a big name in your event, is your event in trouble?" One of the oldest non-major events on the circuit, the GGCC is inexorably tied to seven-time winner Sam Snead. Unfortunately, is situated in the unenviable position of falling just a few weeks after the Masters when most of the world's best players are taking a couple weeks off. But several options are being considered to improve the visibility of the event, and Sharp says there's reason to be optimistic about the tournament's long-term prospects.

In case you missed last week's report, be sure to catch senior writer Derek Duncan's feature on the top Par Fives of Northeast Florida, a listing of the region's greatest long holes. Like myself, Duncan finds the par five a fascinating part of golf's landscape. "Without temptation and opportunity there can be little excitement, and the best par fives challenge the player to make decisions and think strategically," Duncan writes. Sitting atop his list is the 11th Hole at TPC at Sawgrass (Stadium Course, Ponte Vedra, 529 Yards), which is a classic example of the strategic hole, interpreted by Pete Dye. After reading Duncan's description, you'll be eager to take on the challenge. Other courses mentioned in this week's "best of" rundown include the 18th hole at Matanzas Woods (Palm Coast, 529 Yards), and the 15th hole at the Golf Club of North Hampton (Fernandina Beach, 583 Yards).

As always, if you disagree with our reviewers on a certain course or just want to sound off about the latest from the PGA Tour, be sure to visit the TravelGolf.com forum, a series of message boards where visitors can write about everything from the Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's also a free classifieds section where golfers can advertise that old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for years. And if you haven't checked it out already, be sure to visit the new TravelGolf.com Pro Shop, a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no need to go anywhere else on the Web.

Until next week….happy golfing!
