First time playing course
Good overall challenging course with tricky greens. Like the Par 3 - 9th hole which is an island green.
poor conditions
Although I would recommend, it is only because it is a good lay out. But, course is poorly run and money not being put back into it's maintenance. To wit - very few ball washers and when there is one no towel; no windshield on carts; tee areas very poor condition; weeds in bunkers; cart paths over grown by grass on both sides. Too bad as course could be such an award winning course.
must exercise good club selection and cotrol to do well here.
I didn't have a good round, not a result of course conditions, just wasn't striking the ball well this time out. Will strive for.better results next time.
Well Worth It
Saw that the course was "wide open" for a Thursday afternoon so I decided to play it. Very reasonable price, friendly staff, great weather.
The greens rolled true and where challenging, though a few greens had poorly repaired ball marks - players' fault as much as the greens keepers; tee boxes were in average shape while the fairways were in great shape; only real complain was the bunkers (and thankfully I was only in 3 all day) - they honestly lack sand .... there was more fine dirt than sand in them which makes working on this part of your game tricky.
I'd definitely play here again and hope they work on the bunkers.
Don't waste your time
Found an excellent hot deal, so despite terrible reviews on yelp, figured I'd set up a foursome ($27..huge discount in the Northern VA area)
Even at such a great price, it was not worth the money. First of all, the practice facilities are terrible. It is far and away the worst (condition wise) driving range that I have ever seen. There are colored flags at varied distances, but no key for how far each color represents. Also, the website advertises a putting green at the driving range...well this is completely false. There is an area that obviously USED to be a putting green, but it has not been conditioned as such in months. False advertising
The course itself was also in poor condition. Uneven tee boxes with little to no grass, crab grass all over the fairways AND the GREENS! The conditions around the greens were also terrible...looks like very little effort is put into course maintenance.
Pace wasn't too bad, but it was overcast, which might have scared off potential golfers. Not a single marshal drove by throughout the entire round...and literally saw a group of six playing two holes in front of us.
All in all, i absolutely DO NOT recommend this course....especially if you were to pay full price ($59? HA!) Without a doubt the worst conditioned course in Northern Virginia...better off playing anywhere else.
Challenging layout
Used to playing relatively flat layouts along gulf coast. This was quite a change interesting layout course in pretty good shape greens rolling well played on a Tuesday afternoon deserted. Enjoyable round will be back soon
This course has challenging features
First time and playing single alone is a little bit more thinking on almost every stroke especially like the Hole#2,#3 and#4 where there were over the water and the water on the side with narrow fairways. Better warmed up before the round and need a sleeve of balls extra.
Great course
Exceptional layout that is very scenic yet requires demanding tee and approach shots. Overall great design and would recommend this course to anyone who is looking for an affordable yet challenging place to play
VA Oaks
Challenging course, with wide fairways. However, worth a discounted tee time.
Could be better maintained
The problem for public courses such as this is that many people who play do not use golf etiquette. Balls marks were not fixed, sand was not raked, and divots were not replaced. The group in front of us did not play ready golf, or take several clubs with them (cart path only on course that day) when determining how to hit their next shot. As a result, what should be a fantastic course (no. 10 is a great golf hole) is reduced to a mediocre course. Personally speaking, I am willing to pay a few more dollars to play a well-maintained course than have lower greens fees and pay with a poorly maintained course.
Excellent all around
It was my first time I played in Virginia Oaks
Golf Course. A Great Course, Service and
Beautiful place. I will play there anytime !
Sad Shape
Really disappointed in this course, not worth the money. This is a nice layout but the course conditions were terrible. The golf range was terrible, no grass on the tees and the one club washer had trash in it. Bunkers were hard with grass growing in them, greens were slow with bare spots. Fairways and rough were not mowed and there were unfilled divots all over. There was no marshal to keep things moving as play was slow. The course staff used the excuse, "We have a lot of play".
Food & Beverage services are great.
As usual, people are friendly and food is great. But as usual, the course condition is not great. The greens were very slow and threw everybody off. We actually mentioned chipping on the green, but we didn't. The tee boxes are fairly poor condition. It's uneven! Once again, the pace of the play is terrible! We waited about 5 to 10 minutes every tee box. We knew it would be a slow pace since it was Father's Day but this course is always slow paced on weekends even if they make course relatively easy with pin position and moving the tees up. I guess you get what you paid. The green fees were about $20 cheaper than other nice courses but we decided that we will pay more for better pace and much better course condition. I'm not a angry customer, just writing the true experience. I would go back and play VA Oaks again but not on weekends. Thanks.
Enh, it's golf.
You get a challenging course because of tight fairways and smaller greens. Plays slow when you Putt for sure. But decent price and could be better maintained.
Decent Golf Course
It was a decent course. A little expense for its condition, but it was overall an enjoyable experience.
Challenging course
VA Oaks is a challenging course with many dog leg holes, lots of water hazards and sand/grass bunkers. There are some elevated greens as well as several up and downhill rises, mostly uphill. The views from some holes are spectacular on a clear day like when I played. The front nine is tighter than the back but you rarely feel closed in by the surrounding houses. The course is being well kept with only one green having some scarring. We played an early morning round so the speed of the greens increased with the drying of the morning dew. For the money , you get an excellent variety if holes that challenge you to really know your club distances. Being short many holes will cost you an extra stroke, with a difficult up and down.
Overall, it plays as challenging as any course in the area and Is $20- 50 less per round.
Need to Improve the Pace of Play
The course was in good shape and it is a fun layout. However, they have got to monitor the pace of play -- another 5+ hours to complete the round (similar to my last round on this course) with several minutes spent waiting to play each shot.
Great day for golf...pace was good.
The course has improved as the season has started in full swing. 2 Marshals out today and pace was good. Great sale on shirts...thanks Cindy, Kathleen and Travis. Mr Davis is always welcoming as the starter. Great day our for the wife and I.
Island Green
This course has an island green. Such a cool hole. Really gives you a taste of what the pros go through. No one in my foursome made the green, but it sure was fun trying and laughing.
